An aging iron bridge at the foot of Main Street over the East Fork is deemed dangerous and a menace to traffic. Despite prior repairs by Miles Deal and his crew, the structure now worsens and could collapse under heavy trucks from Cincinnati. The writer calls for urgent action and says state or national funds could fix the bridge to save lives.
The Advisory Council of the Clermont County District Board of Health meets Monday May 2 to elect a five year board member. N Young’s term expires. The meeting occurs annually and includes the township trustees chair and village mayors. Dr CO R Colburn serves as County Health Commissioner.
Batavia Bridge fans await the second session in a five night run to crown the top pair. To reach finals, a pair must play in at least two preliminaries. After Thursday the schedule resumes April 22 and 26 with finals on the 29th. Admission is 60 cents nightly. reservations to Harold D Nichols in Batavia.
Mrs Frank Clasgens nee Emma Fridman dies in Miami Beach Florida Saturday night. A Clermont county native and New Richmond native, she and her husband survive with a brother and sister. Funeral from J P White Sons Funeral Home New Richmond Thursday at 2330 with burial at Wilmetile Illinois, her former home.
The mad dog scare led to two dog killings and a 80 day tie-up in Batavia. Mayor Orville Halbisch issued a proclamation that kept many dogs off the courthouse corner, leaving the streets strangely quiet and dogless.
W H Robinson, veteran show promoter, overhauls the Sun office building behind the bank, lowering the floor to sidewalk level and upgrading interiors for a modern show room. Batavia could support a robust show business as he moves from Williamsburg. the town hall cinema has ceased operations.
Public notice from Clermont county Deputy State Supervisors of Elections explains voting residence under the 1932 law. A voter's home is where habitation is fixed and return is intended, including the family residence. special rules apply for District of Columbia or federal service. A Chicago syndicate attorney indicated his firm will purchase the $40,000 bond issue if bond-issue proceedings receive attorney approval. Work could start soon as preparations are complete and the funding secured, promising a rapid surge of construction activity.
Community Club met Thursday with 17 members. President Mrs. Fannie Reed presented business matters. The club raffled a quilt donated and made by members. winner 198 was Miss Emma Peck. They will move to Mr. Chapman’s room next week and host a May 6 luncheon hosted by Mesdames Berger Buckley and Puckett.
The Williamsburg Board of Public Affairs and S O P Light negotiate cheaper electric rates. The council approves a tiered 9¢ 25 kwh 6¢ 60 kwh and 4¢ 125 kwh plan to submit to the utility as the town weighs a municipal plant similar to Bethel.
An interesting program is planned for the 66th annual convention of the Institute of the Clermont County Council of Religious Education to be held at the WB church Braught Hill on Friday and Saturday May 6 and 7.
Farm Bureau Grange surveys candidates for State Representative and Senator asking views on county government reform election laws highway and education departments welfare taxes and budget. Responses favor county manager form, tax relief, road modernizations, and broader economy measures while noting election law refinement and administrative reforms.
Spring cleanup urged in Batavia with plans for yard and alley cleaning. Town to fund drawage and hauling to remove winter accumulations and eye sores. Will Batavia act to organize the effort.
Pomona Grange meets at Williamsburg on Saturday the 16th for an all day session. Urgent request for each grange to send a strong delegation. Newly elected officers will be in place, with interesting and instructive discussions. Bring well filled baskets for a dinner noted as a bit point at these sessions.
The 6:40 a.m. Williamsburg to Cincinnati bus will be discontinued May 1. The Portsmouth 7:00 a.m. bus will move to 6:00 a.m. and pass Williamsburg at 8:24 a.m. instead of 9:24 a.m. The eastbound Cincinnati 7:30 p.m. departure will also be discontinued.
Oscar J Smith, accused of robbing a Blanchester bank, was bound over to the grand jury in Wilmington in a $10,000 bond. He pled not guilty at arraignment, later pleaded guilty after indictment, and was sentenced to life in the penitentiary under a new law. Bank officials identified him as the hold up man who claimed the gold cash. He refused to answer questions or recognize visiting relatives.
Mrs. Kate Stultz died at the home of Mr and Mrs Jacob Friend in Batavia after a long illness. She lived most of her life in Perintown, later Bethel, and moved with her niece to Batavia after her husband’s death. Funeral was held at the residence Saturday at 2 p.m. with burial at Bethel.
J C Bauman a noted New Richmond resident and operator of an auto radio store at Front and Walnut streets died soon before noon Tuesday after a heart attack Monday night and a relapse Tuesday morning. A former Republican central committeeman he was active in Clermot county politics and leaves a sister Miss Emma Bauman and a half sister Mrs Christine Farino Rhinehardt. Funeral Thursday.
Batavia live stock sales held weekly on Wednesdays west of town draw buyers from near and far. Good prices are paid for stock offered with ample accommodations and courteous treatment to both bidders and animals. Every sale has been well attended.
