Fire destroys Dennis and Teasdale store building
Fire swept the Dennis and Teasdale dry goods and clothing building opposite the courthouse at 4 am last Friday. Firemen fought the blaze quickly but the structure and contents suffered severe damage from flames smoke and water. The G A R post outfit and W R corps lodge goods were lost. The building dates to 1859 with about 3000 original cost and insured stock and premises coverage varied by company. Dennis and Teasdale operated there about twenty years.

Battle memory at Puttabure Landing and Indiana monument
Forty one years ago on April 6 1862 a major battle near Puttabure Landing saw many Clermontforts slain or dying as Federal troops were driven to the river edge. Reinforcements aboard the steamer John P Roe joined the 59th Regiment from Savannah, the fight continuing into Monday morning with a Confederate retreat and a dedication of Indiana’s soldiers monument yesterday by citizens and veterans.
