County Prosecutor Davidson renews actions challenging former Auditor Davis and bondsmen over overdrawn fees. Judge Newby previously ruled commissioners must sue for the county, not the prosecutor. New petitions align with that ruling, with hearings set to proceed and further Circuit Court outcomes looming.
The court rules fees in two causes not chargeable to the county while allowing Breeding to collect fees in three other causes. The judgment against Breeding’s petition is reversed in four and five, costs split, and record waived by consent. The matter concerns Breeding as probate judge and bondsmen over equipment costs for public convenience.
Constable Link Whittaker arrested W. O. Weak at Monterey on a warrant charging embezzlement. He waived examination and posted bond for appearance at court.
On Saturday April 11 the newly elected assessors will convene at the auditor's office. They will receive their books and instructions in preparation for entering their duties.
Preparations are underway for the Union Sunday school convention to be held at the M E church on Friday April 2024. A fine program has been prepared and the event promises great interest.
A township Sabbath schools convention will be held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. The program includes devotional exercises, an address by Dr. Bailey, a vocal solo by Miss Bessie Walker, and short talks by school representatives, including Miss Ida Bailey.

A healthful southern Ohio climate saw three Hewitt family deaths within a week. D D Hewitt of Norwood died March 21 at 87, burial Olive Branch March 24. Grandson, aged 19, died in Cincinnati March 22, burial Mt. Moriah March 26. Mrs Mary Louise Hewitt aged 65, widow of Samuel Hewitt, died March 26, burial Olive Branch March 28. A Chicago syndicate plans a bluntly candid paper, but it will not print unbounded political or social gossip even if sensational.
A rabid dog ran through Bata via and bit several animals, including George Baum’s dog, Tom Dustin’s pet, and Lew Buerkle’s hunting hounds. Some animals were killed, others await developments, while unbitten animals remain in temporary retirement. No people were harmed.
Our region’s youthful performers rehearse a popular cantata with eight to ten soloists and a chorus approaching fifty voices. Under musical director P. F. Jamieson the piece should be ready for presentation in a few weeks bringing home talent and refined music to the community.
English authorities grant final pardon to Mrs Maybrick an American jailed fourteen years for her husband’s arsenic poisoning death. Though sentenced to death later commuted to life, support from America and Britain led to royal pardon by King Edward and release set for July 19 1904.

William T. Kalin of Batavia resigns after six years as steward and purchasing agent at Mansfield State Reformatory to become head steward at the Algonquin in Dayton. A self made man who left school at 15, he rose from grocery work to postmaster, then to managing the paper’s finances before taking the reformatory post. His departure is noted with best wishes from board and friends.
