A large audience attended a soulful Easter service at the Methodist church last Sunday night. The program featured organ preludes, scripture readings, multiple recitations by children and classes, songs by the Lily Quartet and Wilson Sisters, and performances by Miss Griffiths Class and Miss Stoltz’s Class, all under the guidance of Mrs. Shirley Griffith and her assistants.
Louis Craver Jr. trains two dogs to act as transport harnessed like horses. The 11 year old owner drives them to Batavia for school and to Owensville, keeping the animals well cared for and away from town dogs. The dogs serve as bodyguards and accompany him on creekside rides when school ends.
The Summer Hotel at Shadeland caught fire last Sunday noon. The roof ignited from a chimney spark and quickly got out of control. Neighbors saved some contents before the building, formerly the Nichols homestead, burned completely. Mr Waters and family had occupied the site as a summer hotel for years. Insurance was $2,000.

A group of Batavia Masons visited the Yateman Masonic lodge on Friday night for an inspection and enjoyed a royal good time. Yateman always entertains her visitors with hospitality.
Mrs H Stirling Moore entertained a group of children at her home Friday night in honor of her cousin Amy Dean Davis of Columbus. Guests included former school mates and friends of Amy Dean. The evening featured games music and conversation with ice cream and cake served.
The Batavia lodge visited the Amelia chapter Saturday night and conferred the second and third degrees on one candidate. A large attendance praised the work and a fine lunch followed the ceremony.
W F Shaw and Henry Reynolds left Sunday for Nashville Tennessee to spend a few days. On their return Mr Shaw will drive his auto left there last fall and open the brick works at home as preparations are completed.
John W. Thompson of near Bethel died March 27 1915. Born March 18 1828 in Pyetown Brown County he married Polina O Hara and lived over sixty years. He was the county's last Mexican War veteran and three remain in the state. He also served three years in the Civil War.
The Presbyterian church received six new members last Sunday morning by letter and baptism. Named are Mr. and Mrs. Stanley C. Huber Edmond Parrott Howard Hawkins Harry Slade and Lester Hauck.
Voters in Hamer township Highland county rejected centralization on Tuesday of last week by 75 to 184. The issue drew strong arguments on both sides as the debate continued.
Clarence N Young was named district tax assessor for Clermont county with immediate effect. He traveled to Columbus to receive instructions and his commission on April 1 and filed his bond. He instructed the county assessors starting their spring work and new appointees were named statewide. He is described as fair and devoted to a square deal.
Garden time arrives as vendors scramble for stock. Mr. Hitler of Hillsboro reports 25 000 cabbage plants and 60 000 tomato plants ready for setting and says he will mail to all parts. Contact him if you need any.
Easter Sunday drew a large crowd to the German United Brethren church with 145 in Sunday school and a special collection of 89 dollars. More than 160 attended the morning service and there was a large attendance again in the evening.
An advertisement notes Dean's Olntznecht as a remedy for piles and eczema itch. It promotes purchase at all drug stores and cautions that scratching worsens itching.
A patriotic musical program will be held at the German United Brethren church on Thursday evening April 8 at 7 30. Grand Army members and all veterans are urged to attend with Batavia citizens. Rev KE Burdsall post commander and Rev E F Wegner pastor handle arrangements. Admission free a collection will aid a new piano for the church youth.
Fire damaged Keen home for a fourth time in recent years caused by a defective flue. Mrs Keen, ill in an adjoining room, was moved to safety as schoolchildren sparked alarm after the blaze was spotted. No local fire alarm system existed, relying on loud calls rather than bells.
The Olive Branch school will observe Arbor Day with exercises and a Friday evening bargain sale. Friends are asked to donate saleable articles with cost marks, boxes of eatables unlabelled, ice cream rolls and coffee served. Proceeds for the school. The program begins at 7 30 with races games and a jolly time. Admission is free and all friends invited.
The Woman's Club gathers Saturday April 10 at 2 30 p m. Program titled Whats Doing in the World Music Along the Mighty Amazon by Mrs Scott The Panama Canal and Its Future and Short Poems. Hostess Mrs Aultman A box social at White Oak school house Saturday evening April 10 raises funds for the library.
Last Sunday afternoon Hara Seyler riding a motorcycle for pay over to the Ohio pike returned past Share Boles farm at 60 miles an hour when the front wheel fork broke causing the wheel to run away. The front end dragged along then struck a stone and threw him onto the road injuring him modestly. He collected the pipes and walked home saying he soon will ride again in a runabout.
Mrs Otis Smith here underwent an operation at her home last week. The procedure was successful and she is improving rapidly. Her friends cordially wish her a speedy recovery.
The Liquor License Board has moved into Hamilton building room No 1, joining the election board and prose outor in a rented county facility. Critics urge using county buildings to save taxpayer money and question the expense of renting additional rooms.
First National Bank takes over the German American Bank including business and equipment. The $25,000 capital stock is transferred with lease and fixtures, vote shows nearly unanimous approval with one dissent. W H Baum is expected to join First National. transfers will move business to the First National while fixtures stay briefly.
A box social will be held at the Jackson school house Nicholsville on Friday night April 9 for the benefit of Spring Grove M E church. Lowell Roudebush renowned lecturer will speak on his Arctic Experience. Admission free and all are invited.
The Mt. Holly residence of Mrs Laura Brother ton burned to the ground last Saturday due to a defective flue. She was alone when the fire started. some household goods were saved. Insurance coverage was $800.

Mrs. Harry Jester of Crosstown stayed with Delmar Jester family several days. B L Harris of Cincinnati and Harry Moyer visited at the Way Side. Delmar Jester visited his sister near Marathon. W O Maham and family from Cincinnati were guests of Ed and Laura Wacker for a day. Patch Friday will be hosted at Miss Laura Wacker’s home with all urged to attend.
Mrs Gertrude Gelvin entertained a group of young friends at the Batavia Hotel last Friday evening. The dining room was nicely decorated for Easter with games guessing contests and music. Refreshments were served as the attendees enjoyed a delightful evening.
Captain W. S. Bechtel of the local O. N. G. unit suffered a light stroke of paralysis last Friday. The temporary effect faded within an hour and he remains in his duties as captain.
The Dramatic Club of Belfast presented Country Kid in Williamsburg to a small but warm audience. Spectators praised the performance and the cast, saying they deserve larger crowds for delivering professional level drama.
Tommy the peeper confessed before the court and received probation. He must report weekly, leave the streets by 7, and not linger or glance around on his way home. The judge ordered notifying concerned women to be cautious to avoid temptation for the vulnerable.
The State of Ohio vs Wolford Hutson of Milford heard Monday. Hutson pleads guilty to contributing to delinquency of Mabel Carter, also of Milford, age 17. Judge fines him 100 dollars plus costs and 30 days in the work house, suspended on payment. He is released after settlement. Carter will turn 18 in June and is ordered to the Girls Industrial Home at Delaware until age 21.
The Goshen Eastern Stars held their first meeting last week with strong attendance. Officers installed include W M Ethel Roudebush, W P H M Renner, A M Anna Clark, conductress Mrs Mary McCormick, A C Mary Farson, secretary Vesper Saxton, treasurer Beulah Rich ie, chaplain Minnie Cook, warder Mabel Renner, marshal Lottie Andrews, organist Myrie Richie, Adah Beulah Donnelly, Ruth Luella Thompson, Esther Loraney Bray, Martha Frances Thompson, Electa Mrs Frank Bray, sentinel.
Manager Charlie Herzog returns to Cincinnati for ten days of pre season work as the Reds prepare to host Pittsburgh in a four game set starting April 14. Herzog praises winter additions Dooin Leach Wingo Olsen Griffith and new pitchers and predicts a top four finish. Opening day crowds surge with $1 seats still available at Cincinnati Base Ball Club offices.
