Amelia rally draws about 250 at Clermont County GOP event

A Thursday evening Republican gathering in the Amelia school basement drew roughly 250 attendees. Speakers included S. A. Ringer, Frank Willis, Manly Hill, John Hayden, and Mrs. Robert A. Taft who urged fiscal restraint and warned of New Deal policies. Mack Agin announced a new young Republican club as music and dinner followed.

Local Politician Candidacies At Republican Meeting

John Hayden announced his bid for the Republican nomination for General Assembly representative. Frank Willis sought the short term county commissioner seat, Manly Hill the regular term commissioner, and S A Ringer of Leesburg declared for Congress from the 6th district at the same meeting.

County Officials Plan Early Start on N. and W. Underpass

A Columbus delegation led by County Commissioners Frank Willis Ezra Seyler and J M Hutchinson County Engineer Carl Rush Mayor J M Wiseman and City Solicitor Russell Speidel met J H Burke of the State Highway Department to review plans for the N and W underpass and crossing. All signs point to an early project start.

Fruit Damage Not Severe in Clermont County

A quick survey by County Agricultural Agent Roy Battles shows fruit losses from a weekend freeze are not as bad as feared. Early plums and peaches show some damage, apples less affected, Kieffer pears hardy, Lombard plums reduced, German Prune plums largely untouched, with temps reported around 28 to 30 degrees. If no more freezes occur in three weeks, the crop seems likely to run only slightly below normal.

Death of Mt. Crab resident Earl Jones at Milford street

Earl Jones 87 of Mt. Crab died Monday afternoon on a Milford street near Dr. J. C. Spencer's office. He was brother to Tom Jones of Milford. Survived by his wife and two children.

Gas Theft Brings $50 Fine Friday

Clyde Baker, 26, of Newtown remained jailed after failing to pay a $50 fine in Mayor Wiseman's court for gas theft. Police say a trio tried to flee Kahle's Filling station with five gallons, crashing their car, leaving two accomplices unnamed. Baker faced three charges, pled guilty to petit larceny, and had the other counts dropped. Baker, married with two children, admitted the wrecked 1930 Chevrolet wasn't paid for.

Five of Williamsburg family injured in Route 74 crash

Five members of the Shoemaker family are seriously injured after a car driven by WPA worker Wilbur Shoemaker swerved from Route 74 five miles west of Williamsburg. Hattie Shoemaker, Lena Belle, William, and Eugene suffered injuries. Hattie remains in General Hospital Cincinnati for treatment.

Alumni Association gathers at Hogan's Milford for banquet

The Alumni Association of Ohio Wesleyan University met at Hogan's Tourist Home in Milford Friday evening April 1 with 39 attendees. Charles G. White acted as toastmaster. speeches were given by Paul Biffle secretary treasurer of the Delaware Student Body and B E Cartmell secretary to the University Board of Trustees. Officers elected for the year: W. R. Bass president, A. L. Daughters vice president, Dorothy Hogan second vice president, Ann M. Kramer secretary, W. E. Simms treasurer.

Batavia report notes a elderly woman seriously injured in a hit and run accident. Authorities seek the motorist responsible while police investigate the collision and resulting fatality.

Commissioners Vote to Vacate Road in Goshen Township

At the adjourned session in the Courthouse the County Commissioners heard opinions on vacating a road in Goshen Township. After strong opposition the commissioners voted unanimously to vacate the road in favor of the state. Miss Martha Budd is spending her spring vacation with home folks.

Burley Tobacco Producers Vote On Quotas Saturday

Ohio burley tobacco farmers in Clermont and surrounding counties will vote on April 9 to determine whether a marketing quota for the 1939 crop is set. If two thirds voted against, quotas are not applied. the 1938 quota could be 3850 million pounds if approved.

New Signs Add Artistic Touch At Clermont County Courthouse

Clarence Zimmerman and John Thomas, janitors, smile as 20 new signs go on courthouse doors. County Commissioner Frank Willis says the signs, red bordered aluminum on dark oak, hang from a gilt arrow and mark rooms including clerk of courts, auto title, jury room, Common Pleas Judge, stenographer, and other departments.

Clermont County WPA sewing project approved

A county wide WPA sewing room project costing about 14814 dollars has been approved for Clermont County by the President. A letter from James G. Polk, Sixth District Congressman, to county commissioner J. M. Hutchinson notes the project awaits Comptroller General review and aims to employ mainly women to provide free products to charities and the needy.

First Clermont County Volleyball Tourney Set at Batavia High

On Saturday April 9 Batavia high gym hosts Clermont county's first volleyball tournament. Eight schools enter with afternoon matches Milford vs Goshen Amelia vs Owensville Williamsburg vs Batavia Felicity vs Bethel. Evening session starts at 6 with semifinals, finals by nine and 10 cent admission per session for trophies.

Mrs Hauck Dies After Hit and Run Night Incident

Clermont County Grand Jury Returns One True Bill

The Clermont County Grand Jury reported at 3 p.m. Tuesday finding one true bill after examining 10 witnesses. They will report again April 25. Clarence Huff was indicted for robbery. The jury consisted of seven men and one woman.

Batavia Officials Explore WPA Project For City Paving

Weldon McGlann, Senior Office Engineer, WPA Cincinnati, met with Batavia officials and citizens at the Court House at 1 30 pm on April 5 to discuss a possible WPA project to pave any street and include storm and sanitary sewer construction. The Village Council is to take proper steps immediately.
