A Ohio Experiment Station advisory urges testing all seed corn despite mild winter. External appearance is unreliable. germination testing with a ragdoll device and cloth squares provides proof of viability. Five kernels per ear are tested. ears with low germination should be discarded.
Columbus reports Clermont county will get its pikes in the next setting. The plan remains 40 to 60 with the State paying 10 percent. The pikes will be built, and the county’s portion of the money has been raised.
The Helping Circle of Old Bethel M E Church hosted an annual Easter supper at the Callahan residence on March 26 with about fifty attendees. A program, festively set tables, and an evening of games and music concluded as guests departed with hopeful plans to meet again next year.
On March 24 1921 Country Club No 50 met at Mrs C L Kellums home with Leader Mrs Jessie Parnell. Reading The Regal Lilly and The Preggs were presented. Twenty members and guests enjoyed chicken sandwiches salad cream pie and coffee and adjourned pleased with the afternoon.
Investigations show widespread damage to peaches pears and cherries after last week's deep freeze. Strawberries remain largely unhurt while remaining fruit may drop before maturity and dealers hold prices, with apples stored previously keeping prices stable despite losses. Southern fruit not shipped due to high freight rates.
Auditor Reed announces tax listings open Sunday April 10 under state law and county planks will provide return envelopes. Taxpayers with property over 100 dollars must file or face penalties. returns due by May 1, after which assessors canvass. No exemptions, evasion penalties apply.
The executive committee of the American Farm Bureau Federation and state federation representatives will meet in Washington D C starting April 11 to draft a legislative program for Congress. A five member Legislative committee was authorized in Chicago on February 17 to shape Farm Bureau policies with input from the national and state executives. President Howard urges broad support from state representatives for this crucial Sixty sixth Congress measure.
May 14 field day for Clermont county will be held at the Boston Fair Grounds. The committee is arranging all preparations and a broad athletic program with exhibits. Aimed as one of the county’s greatest gatherings of young people, schools plan to participate in the games.
Batavia basketball squad traveled to Winchester with a large group of supporters for a return game. The contest was hard fought and well played, but Batavia was defeated 45 to 19. Officials say the team is strong and with another year of experience the score will swing in their favor.
Two hundred miners at Parr's Run Coal Co. in Moundsville vote ten to one to accept a 10 percent wage reduction effective tomorrow, following a meeting in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Spelling contest rankings list Seven as top with 100 percent and Eight at 80 percent. The basketball team lost 45 to 10 at Winchester. Seed orders will fund library purchases. Teachers Miss Ely Miss Behymer visited Cincinnati while Miss Thacker visited Washington Court House. Prof Kellum met Supt Marlowe in Batavia about the Owensville field meet on May 14.
The notice states there will be enough regularly qualified teachers to fill county schools so no Temporary or Emergency certificates will be granted for the coming year. Boards should hire only regular certificate holders or those with thirty weeks of Normal training plus examination by August end. Temporary certificate holders must take the May 7 1921 exam.
Deerfield Club No. 61 met at Mrs. Chas. Buschs house on March 17 with 12 members and four guests. Miss Laura Wacker and Mrs. Alma Patterson led roll call, President's Sayings, topic National Government. Hostess provided music on a vicirola. Social hour followed with fruit punch and cake. Next meeting set for April 21 with Mrs. Davidson.
The Batavia reservoir that sprang a leak last week will be repaired at an estimated cost not to exceed 26 dollars. Work directed by the board and superintendent will begin as soon as materials can be placed for use.
The Milford Legion minstrel show at the town hall Friday night raised nearly $40 after expenses for the Milford and Batavia Legions. The proceeds will bolster the fund toward a future home for the order now housed in the armory.
Clermont county Holstein breeders will hold an organization meeting at the Farm Bureau office in Batavia next Saturday at 1 30 p m. A committee report on a constitution and by laws will be presented and all county breeders urged to attend.
The Teachers Association held in Batavia town hall Saturday drew few teachers but featured interesting talks. Attendees expressed profit from the talks and called the day well spent, noting prior low attendance at such meetings.
Chas Snider, a former New Richmond resident, is jailed in Portsmouth on bigamy charges after marrying in Kentucky eighteen months prior. His first wife resides at Clermont County infirmary. A letter from Superintendent Slye prompted his confession to Bertha Snider, whom he believed dead. Wife No 2 may face prosecution if she knew of the prior marriage. Fred J. Baker traced the first wife in Portsmouth and will pursue proceedings in Newport, Kentucky.
Ohio tax blanks mail to public places in townships and villages. Property owners must list personal property above 100, swear before a notary, and send to the Auditor in Batavia by May 1. The tax year starts the Sunday before the first Monday after the first Sunday in April, with several local towns named for pickup.

Mrs Edith V Jones of Amelia is among those granted a $308 monthly pension last week. The sum is a significant aid to widows, replacing a previous $12 yearly limit and increasing benefits for many recipients.
Miss Eunice Krantz of Batavia and Will Smith of Glen Este married at the Catholic church last Wednesday morning in a large ceremony lasting about ninety minutes. The bride, former Batavia Bell exchange operator, and groom plan to live on a Glen Kate farm for now.
