A Clermont county reader laments the new personal property tax law’s complexity. He asks for clearer guidance on filling blanks, notarization fees, and the official process, warning of potential penalties for misreporting and seeking details on an assessor’s role.
Joseph Grant of Gonzales Texas and Miss Mary Grant of Hutchinson Kansas arrive in Batavia with the remains of Anna Fishback Grant who died at Hutchinson on April 6. She lived much of her life in Batavia and 1882 moved to Hutchinson. A service was held at Jennié Penn Tuesday with many lifelong friends in attendance.
A new volunteer regiment named the Miami Volunteer Infantry is forming in the Miami Valley with Clermont Brown and Adams counties anticipated to contribute a battalion of about 600 men. Residents are urged to volunteer promptly, with contact to Lieut. Col. H. B. Glancy in Batavia Ohio.
Company K led by Captain W S Bechtel mobilizes fast toward war strength from Batavia and Bethel with 74 signed members and 11 more ready to enlist. The unit lists ranks from captain to privates and aims to reach 100 by Saturday night.
Opinion argues farm boys enlistment lags behind city recruits as rural youths rush to urban jobs. Farmers report reduced labor, tighter crops, and higher produce costs while boys head to towns and cities for work, leaving farms understaffed during wartime.

A series of meetings will be held in the Batavia Presbyterian Church starting May 1 with Mott R. Sawyer of Norwood in charge. Preparations are made for a profitable service and the public is invited. Rev. Simpson has secured Sawyer and good music will enhance the services.

At a Batavia special meeting, Commissioner AnsteADT moved to buy a 12 foot flag and 40 foot staff for the courthouse corner. The motion carried and the outfit has been ordered. The motion was a popular one.
On April 17 1917 Loveland village voters decide on issuing 30000 in bonds for school purposes as many new school buildings rise across the state.
Clermont county fans split into North and South leagues. North schedule lists April games at Goshen Milford Williamsburg Owensville Loveland and Williamsburg with matches on April 6 18 20 27 and May 4 followed by May 11 championship games between the leading teams.
Georgetown announces its chautauqua opens July 28 and runs nine days with daily musical changes and attractions. The feature includes new numbers daily and no repeats. A local wedding occurs earlier in the week as Daniel G Deviquen and Lena Hall of Moore's Fork wed with Rev. Reimpson officiating.
The Clermont County Cow Testing Association No. 2 met in Newtonsville to organize for the year. Officers elected include Perry Groves president, J. W. Dumford secretary, and Allen of Milford National Bank treasurer. Testing planned to begin May 1 with a meeting on April 21 to outline work.
County Agricultural Agent S. B. Stowe announces a soy bean hay test at the Experiment Farm and continues grain variety trials. Hay tests include Ohio 9100 Medium Green Ohio 9035 Mammoth Yellow Virginia Black and mixtures with cowpeas oats and Canadian peas. Inoculation advised and free culture for a bushel available upon request.
Subscribers are asked to remit their Mon roe two Junior Corn Contest fund to A.8. Marsh, treasurer, New Richmond Ohio. The contest is certain with entries secured and attention requested at earliest convenience. Also notices outline the eighth grade examination schedule for Central District with testing sites at Batavia Bethel Amelia and start times at 4 30.
H B Glaser urges universal temperance action on Easter day, likening women at the tomb to crusaders rolling away the stone. He notes wartime awakening, Congressional moves, and broad religious and political unity to eliminate liquor’s evils nationwide.
The Alpine Farm Woman's Club held its March meeting at Mrs. Levi Storer's home and added two new members to reach 20. On March 30 they celebrated guest day and a house warming for Mr and Mrs John Varney with music recitations and a contest followed by supper. A pie rocker was presented to the Varneys, with attendees including Mrs Elliott Arewine Miss Pearl White and William Clemons.
Despite rain a large audience attended the Easter service at the Methodist church. Rev. Martin delivered the sermon and Miss Walker led an excellent musical program with chorus, orchestra, and organ. Her solo impressed all, offering a rare memorable treat. One attendee noted the inspiring service.
At a patriotic mass meeting in the town hall on Friday night, organizers urged establishing a fund to cover the cost of raising recruits across the county. The proposal suggests creating the same fund at all patriotic gatherings.
