Home Census Begins in Clermont County With 26 Enumerators

Clermont County started the decennial census Tuesday with 26 enumerators named to cover the county's 14 townships and all incorporated villages. Each enumerator carries a list of 34 to 50 questions on employment housing age birth citizenship marital status and education. Harry L. Hopkins oversees the census from Washington with William Lane Austin directing field operations in the Sixth Ohio District under Wray Beven of Waverly. Enumerators are appointed through local Democratic organizations. about 28 positions expected in the county and the field period will last roughly three weeks.

Clermont County farmers insured their 1940 wheat harvest under the Federal crop insurance program will begin loss adjustments. The process includes inspection to determine total or partial losses, with indemnities payable for total losses and options for deferred settlement. Three Hurt In Auto Crack-up On Rt 5 West Of Marathon

Three people were injured Saturday afternoon when a steering mechanism failed on a Pontiac driven by Dr. H A Connor elderly New Richmond physician. Mrs Waters and Dr Connor were taken to Dr Mate in Williamsburg. Mrs Waters treated for two broken wrists. Dr Connor had cuts and bruises. Mr Waters suffered shock and bruises. Mrs Waters later moved to Bethesda Hospital and is recovering.

The Batavia High School annual athletic banquet honoring the boys and girls basketball teams was held in the school auditorium. A P T A dinner, decorated tables, and service by Mrs. Gerald Iles accompanied by awards for meritorious service to players and managers. The County Commissioners approved Croswell Transportation Company of Williamsport as the lowest bidder to supply a new Oldsmobile 70 for the Sheriff’s office. The trade in of a wrecked Buick valued at 517.25 plus $275 insurance left a cash difference of 225 dollars.

P F Jamieson executive vice president of the First National Bank Batavia received a gold medal from Judge Charles G White for 50 years as a Mason. John Huntington led the evening with remarks as Hensey Howland sang and Donald Jamieson played piano. John C Fuhr of Williamsburg attended with other county visitors. Batavia Underpass bid date moved with higher estimate

State Highway Department reams up bids for the Batavia Underpass project at the western Batavia line near the N and W Railroad on State Route 74. The latest estimate is 141 517 82 with completion moved to September 15 1941 and letting set for April 19. The project cost split includes Federal Aid with the N W Railroad county State Highway Department and Batavia sharing costs.
