Draftees To Pause Inductions Until May Amid Housing Shortage

Unofficial reports indicate no further selective service inductions will occur until May 1 due to housing and equipment shortages. Draft Board No. 1 shows order numbers climbing toward 1,100 while boards send selectees to Fort Thomas for final medical checks.

Mrs Penny Killed Near Williamsburg

Mrs Hattie Penny aged 68 of New Hope was killed when an automobile went over an embankment on Route 133 detour south of Williamsburg. Four others were seriously injured William West 30 Bethel Daisy May Ross 30 Bethel and driver El bert Sandlin 26 Williamsburg. They were taken to Bethesda Hospital Cincinnati.

Paul Nagel of Maplewood New Jersey has been elected president of Phi Eta Sigma Miami University Freshman Scholarship Fraternity. Allen Nichols Batavia was elected vice president Norman Dohner Arcanum secretary and Robert Davis Urbana treasurer. Six Clermont County schools form a county league with Batavia Williamsburg and Goshen in the northern half and Amelia Felicity and New Richmond in the south. County champions advance to the Southwestern district tournament in Cincinnati in early May.

County Highway Deaths Set Mark Over Week End

Last weekend Clermont County saw a spike in wrecks as speed maniacs caused multiple fatal and serious injuries. Ed ward Owens died when his car collided with Mrs. Alvin Hildebrand on the A and P highway near New Richmond. Verna Newman 14 died in a Baylon car crash on Route 50 near Owensville. Harvey Brewer, driver in the Baylon incident, faced manslaughter charges and is jailed on bond. Officials vow a strict crackdown on drunk and careless driving after five highway deaths this year.

Oil drum torch blast injures Hamlet filling station operator

Omer Loudenback, operator of a Hamlet filling station, was severely injured when an acetylene torch ignited gas trapped in a drum he was cutting. The blast hurled him ten feet, tearing his clothing, and he was rushed to Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati for treatment.

Clermont County Baseball League Plans 2023 Season Start

The Clermont County Baseball League will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday April 8 at 8 PM in the Batavia Courthouse. Officers will be chosen and plans for the season made.
