April 6 marked Army Day urging flag display and reflecting the U S entry into World War I as observers recall the Army's role in national defense. The piece notes drafts and universal training thoughts, local twin calves born on the Robert Braun farm, and a Clermont County lion hunt using a spotlight to scare off wildlife.
Glermont County plans drag top and ditching on Wolf Penn Pleasant Hill pike from Route 50 to Route 28 in Miami township and on Williamsburg Bantam Road from East Fork Bridge to Twin Bridge Head. Everett Carter of Batavia was high bidder and received the Dodge dump truck recently advertised by the county commissioners.
Mr and Mrs Earl Howland of Williamsburg announce the engagement of their daughter Alleyne to James Anstaett son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Anstaett of Williamsburg. Alleyne is a Plainville High School Mariemont graduate and James served three years in the Army with 22 months overseas. A summer wedding is planned.
The Courier was represented at a four day News Photography short course at Kent State University by Thomas Fortney. Lecturers included G W Churchill Caroline Valenta Jess Gorkin Richard L Sarno and Frank Scherschel. Attendance was limited to 250 newspaper readers from dailies. Fortney is Jerald Fortney’s brother and joined The Courier last year after four years in the Marines.
Miss Maud Horn art teacher in Middletown schools and resident of Batavia is hospitalized in Georgetown Kentucky recovering from injuries after a weekend trip to the Smoky Mountains Tennessee. She suffered a broken arm bruises and shock as their car was sideswiped by another vehicle north of Georgetown. Her mother Mrs Alma Horn and Mr and Mrs Morley Figgins were uninjured.
Tech-Art Inc toy manufacturers in Milford are constructing a new concrete block and steel plant at 750 Main Street on a 1.5 acre site just outside the village limits. The facility, 63 by 95 feet, will double production and house all-metal toy cranes. Operations expected July 1 with 10 to 25 employees. Allen H. Lloyd (Terrace Park) founded the company in November 1945. John F. Douglas serves as secretary-treasurer.
The Clermont County Baseball League approved the 1948 season start date of May 2 after a Friday meeting. Twelve teams will compete: Amelia Batavia Goshen VFW Loveland VFW Bethel Legion Williamsburg Legion Williamsburg Merchants Owensville Mulberry New Richmond Legion Mt. Carmel and Marathon. Queen City umpires of Cincinnati were selected to officiate with two umpires per game.
The Newtonsville PTA plans a meeting Friday evening April 2 with the Grange in charge of the program.

Sheriff Clyde Dericks urged Clermont County to adopt a year round safety program under Operation Safety for April. He cited Ohio State Safety Council data that most accidents occur within 25 miles of home and urged pedestrians to walk facing traffic, avoid walking when drunk, wear white or light clothing at night, and follow seven safety rules including signaling, stopping at signs, obeying lights, warning pedestrians, driving in proper lanes, staying under speed limits, and avoiding alcohol when driving.
The Clermont County unit of the American Cancer Society will launch the 1948 fund raising campaign on April 1 with John Friend and co workers leading the local drive. Half of the funds stay in county for treatment and control, the other half support national research. Contributions are urged to be placed in business cans throughout April as there will be no door to door canvass. The society received its charter in January 1948.
Mrs. Cornelius Braam and Mrs. Hugo Hanke attended a 4-H Advisors Recognition luncheon at Ohio State University on March 24 with Joy May Warner. H. C. Ramsower presided as pins for 5 to 25 years of service were awarded and A. B. Graham appeared in the tableau Pages of Progress.
Mr and Mrs Herbert Davis announce the birth of a son Ronald Herbert born March 22 at Bethesda Hospital Cincinnati weighing 9 pounds 6 ounces They have one other child Josephine Mr Davis formerly worked for The Courier Route 1 Batavia Ohio
The Amelia pre-school summer roundup will be held at the High School on Wednesday April 21 at nine o clock. Parents must bring each child birth certificate.
Henry A. Middleton of Toledo campaigned in Clermont County on Friday seeking southeastern Ohio votes in the May 4 Republican primary for Judge of the Ohio Supreme Court. Middleton, a longtime Republican, has drawn endorsements from Republican groups in Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas and Wood counties.
Mrs. Anna Braselton hosted a family dinner honoring her mother Mrs. Sarah A Jordan on her 93rd birthday in Bethel. Attendees included Roy Jordan J L Jordan John Herbert and son Rees, Harry Jordan Bryan Jordan and spouses.
Attorney Forrest Ely, recently back from surgery in Cincinnati, returns to Ely White and Davidston in Batavia. He is a WWII Pacific veteran active in Clermont County politics and a Sixth District Republican delegate to the Philadelphia convention. Achievement Day in Clermont County is set for Tuesday April 13 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church Batavia from 10 am to 3 pm with a noon covered dish lunch. The Newtonsville club leads exhibits and reports on the county home demonstration program. The afternoon features a movie, speaker, and installation of home demonstration council members hosted by Olive Branch club with Lindale Club No 4 handling kitchen details and East Fork club arranging table decorations. All homemakers are urged to attend to share experiences and gain program information.
Clermont County man Elbert Brandenburg age 37 of Saltair has been missing since March 24 per his wife Gertrude. He was last seen in a Covington cafe near Michaels Art Bronze Co. wearing a cap and green shirt. His car was found with keys inside at the usual parking place. Five children in family.
Three Clermont County residents were among OSU’s May 19 diploma recipients in a class of about 900. They were Frank Hecter of Amelia, earning a bachelor of science in agriculture. Robert Earls of Goshen, a bachelor of science in education. and Nelson B. King of Batavia, a doctor of veterinary medicine.
Howard Ridgeway of Elk Lick Road was fined $100 and a 30 day jail term for operating a motor vehicle while drunk in a trial before Mayor A C Munden. Nettie Denzter of Cincinnati paid $50 plus costs with $40 suspended for driving without a license. Mary Anderson Marsh of Cincinnati was fined $10 plus costs for passing a school bus. Carl R Harrison paid $25 plus costs for reckless driving.
Junior Wolfe and Sylvester Tucker were home from Fort Knox for Easter. They spent the holidays with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wolfe and Mrs. Eva Tucker.
Mild weather let Walter A. McDonald’s farm workers build terraces on a corn plans field near Owensville. W L Ramsey manages the 396 acre farm and leads soil conservation efforts in Clermont district with help from listed local men and U S Soil Conservation Service technicians.
Representatives from Clermont Brown and Hamilton Counties attended a school lunch workshop for county and city schools in Williamsburg. Speakers included Wade D. Bush O C Carter Dr Martha Koehne and others with planning by Frank Hoggatt H West H Bennett Roy Holmes Claude Courter and Russell Thirey among others.
Thornton Bogert of the Division of Safety and Hygiene in the Industrial Commission of Ohio travels to Clermont County to drum up interest among local industrialists for the All Ohio Safety Congress in Columbus on April 13 14 15. The conference aims to promote accident prevention across Ohio industries with safety program components. Over 3000 industry representatives, mostly supervisory staff or organized labor delegates, are expected to participate and hear talks and discussions on new ways to reduce hazards.
