Irrelevant dog Curly's Civil War tale comes home
A 1865 Elyria Independent Democrat front page recounts Curly the spaniel of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The dog survived wounds at Chicamauga Lookout Mountain and Nashville, returned with scars, and earned a steel collar inscribed to Company A. The piece ties the pet’s loyalty to Civil War memories, ending with a call to repair Ridge Lawn Cemetery statue honoring five fallen soldiers from 125th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

Never pick up hitchhikers, Abby readers advise caution
Absent in this letter column, readers recount tragedies and warn against hitchhiking. A driver faced a $250000 suit after swerving to avoid a collision with a hitchhiker, while another son survived a brutal attack after picking up a rider. Victims urge stronger empathy but agree on avoiding rides.
