Cost cuts and bed reductions reshape the Lorain hospital project. St. Joseph Hospital will build two floors of a four story north wing planned in 1983, reducing beds from 358 by 84 and lowering construction costs from about 16 million to about 14 million. The plan shifts toward outpatient care with new outpatient surgery, a radiation therapy unit, a linear accelerator, and a 200 car lot to serve outpatients.

Six trucks operate on routes now, reducing staff by six and transferring workers to other departments.
Elyria county jail reopened for all cases Tuesday after population fell to 210 and Sheriff Martin Mahony announced a partial closure over the past week and a half. The jail will partially close again when numbers reach 218 to prevent overcrowding and relieve staff strain.
