New York critics pan ABC lineup led by Growing Pains opening tonight and The Insiders debuting Wednesday. The column mocks Growing Pains ending with Alan Thicke mooning his family and condemns The Insiders for sensational rock journalism and flashy visuals, citing tastelessness and slick music as aims.
A high risk music video lampoons journalism and crime with Nicholas Campbell and Stoney Jackson as investigative reporters. A photographer turned ex-criminal mentors a rookie on boosting cars for a sensational story. The script treats danger and vice as entertainment for a teen audience.
The review blasts Growing Pains for its low aim and Thicke as a stiff Jason Seaver, contrasts with The Cosby Show’s successful nonpatronizing comedy. It notes Maggie, played by Joanna Kerns, as a bright spot while critiquing the family dynamics and Michael and Carol’s teen subplots.
