Russians Free Jew Married to American in Moscow

Gabriel Shapiro a Russian Jew married to an American girl was freed after three days in a Moscow prison. Jewish sources said he was among 14 activists released after 30 Jews were arrested in a protest against a new diploma tax for emigration. The group of 50 would access to present a protest letter to the Supreme Soviet. Shapiro, 28 and a chemical engineer, was married in a private ceremony last June to Judith Silver of Cincinnati, a marriage not recognized by Soviet authorities. Mrs. Shapiro said she sent telegrams to President Nixon and Henry Kissinger requesting intercession.
