Pari-Mutuel Law Suit Hearing Set Sept 28
Columbus attorney Evan P. Ford former Democratic state senator filed a taxpayer suit against Beulah Park Jockey Club Inc and its Grove City track challenging Ohio pari mutuel betting law. Common Pleas Judge John R. King will hear the case September 28 after Ford sought to halt betting at the Fall meeting now under way and slated to close October 6. Ford, a former mayoral candidate, argues the 1933 act permitting pari mutuel betting violated the Ohio Constitution’s ban on lotteries.

John A Hartford 79 long leading A and P and chairman of Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co died yesterday of a heart attack in a Chrysler Building elevator. He built the world’s largest grocery chain and ran $3 billion yearly business, starting as a 16 year old sweeper and rising to merchandising genius. His brother George L Hartford 87 survived.
