Ohio legislature faces tax bill vote amid exemptions and overrides
The Ohio Senate debated tax changes with senators from Stark and Toledo opposing the taxation committee recommendation. Electric companies are exempt due to a three percent federal tax. The measure would take effect October 1, 1934, with monthly levy payments and would affect about 20 companies. Critics argued rate increases require Public Utilities Commission approval and that the tax cannot be passed to consumers. The session also processed measures on levies outside the 14 mill limit, a joint committee on highway reciprocity, state reimbursement for forestry programs, and allows bond votes in November under NRA funds. Several bills were defeated, including permits suspension actions and street assessment reductions.
