Sheriff’s trusties worked at Kipton farm despite assurances
The Chronicle Telegram reports Lorain County Sheriff Vernon M. Smith used jail prisoners as workers at his Kipton-Nickel Plate Road farm. The practice continued after promises to halt last May. A prisoner identified as Walter Lach was photographed at the farm and later recognized by Deputies. Lach, sentenced for habitual intoxication, sought release claiming rehabilitation.
