UAW Goes On Strike Against GM Amid Nationwide Picketing
The United Auto Workers began a strike against General Motors idling hundreds of thousands of workers in the United States and Canada. Pickets posted around GM plants in 31 states and two Canadian provinces after failing to secure a pattern-setting contract. GM inventories are expected to last eight weeks.

In North Ridgeville 65 members of Local 276 of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees walked out at 6 am, halting bus, food and custodial services though schools remained open. They seek 40 cents more per hour on a base of 2.25. Negotiations with the school board are at a standstill as a Common Pleas court injunction is sought to force a return to work.

Lorain appoints Joseph Price 62 of 1015 Osborne Ave as safety director replacing Chester Campbell who resigned last Friday. A Brink's security guard passenger shot the hijacker aboard a TWA plane on final Los Angeles to San Francisco leg from New York. The hijacker, later identified, was wounded and in critical condition. 35 passengers exited, and other flights continued as authorities secured the scene.

Clean Up Drive Aims To Tackle Black River Reach
The Elyria Jaycees and The Chronicle-Telegram sponsor a Black River Sunday cleanup on October 11. Project chair Jim Parks says volunteers, from high school groups to local organizations, are sought to supply ropes drags winches bags canoes small boats and trucks for a 13 mile West Branch stretch.
