Hoy Cain announces plan for a new trial based on reported jury foreman error. Mrs. Cain and her daughter were found guilty after a two day trial for firing at a car near their home on Gifford Road near Rt 20. They reported the incident to the sheriff, and deputies produced charges.
Health officials report an outbreak with 2300-plus cases and 69 deaths in the Middle East, now extending to Europe with five new cases in Britain Italy West Germany and Holland. Moslem pilgrims returning from Mecca may seed a world spread, potentially repeating 1891 pandemic patterns.
In Kansas City the worst flood in city history receded leaving millions in damage to mangled cars and mud coated homes. Police fear more bodies may be found in flooded underground garages as 21 people remain missing. Officials warn the disaster surpassed the 1951 flood while lines were down and crews work to reach stranded vehicles.
Kent State University President Brage Golding proposed dedicating a planned gymnasium near the site of the May 4, 1970 shootings as a memorial for the slain students and wounded.
