The Turner parents allege Operation PUSH protests contributed to Mellaine Turner’s death from a sickle cell crisis. Doctors said stress and jeers could trigger the crisis, as Jackson and PUSH spokesmen face questions over the incident at Stevenson Elementary School where the child, healthy earlier, reportedly left for school with twin Marvin in rain.

Jury foreman’s night visit tied to retrial bid

A Gifford Road mother and daughter jailed for felonious assaults may gain freedom this weekend if a retrial motion is granted. Dorothy Cain, 42, and Indy Cain, 20, seek a new trial before Judge Adrian Bedeski after being convicted Aug. 19 for firing on a car believed to carry prowlers. The motion cites juror misconduct by James Geraci, whose overnight visit to the crime scene allegedly tainted deliberations. subpoenas were issued for Geraci and another juror. The Cains began 2-to-15 year terms at Marysville Reformatory for Women after the March incident.

Carter words ease GOP fears over dossiers

Senate Republicans including Howard Baker were assured by President Carter that no dossiers on members of Congress exist. The White House meeting followed Powell’s groundless tip about Sen Charles Percy and was described by Baker as a badly handled but now corrected incident.

Downtown Elyria stores to stay open Wednesdays afternoon

The Elyria Merchants Association approved extending Wednesday hours from noon to 5 30 p m starting Oct 5. Banks may also join, with many offering only drive up service till noon. President William Shepard called the change an end to an old fashioned tradition to capture midweek shopping.

Two Men Die In RL 83 Car Van Collision Near Blyria

A Grafton man and a North Ridgeville man died in a head on crash on RL 83 north of RL Bin Eaton Township southeast of Blyria shortly after 9 am. Robert Crowell 25 of Grafton drove a van and Ralph Weiner 28 of North Ridgeville drove a car. Both were dead when deputies arrived. wrecks were pried apart by hydraulic tools. Crowell photographed for The Light a weekly North Ridgeville paper. No passengers were in either vehicle. Deputy James Ross noted the van left of center and the southbound car attempted to stop as skid marks showed speed. The investigation continues. and the story continues on page A4.

Avon Lake Exec Alexander Swan Die due to 40 Cent Call Error

The body of 55 year old Alexander Swan, an East Ohio Gas Co. executive from Avon Lake, lay in the Cuyahoga County morgue for two days before his wife learned of his death. A 40 cent phone call was not authorized, delaying notification. Swan collapsed Sept. 7 en route to Cleveland Hopkins Airport for a business trip and died at St. John Hospital. The miscommunication involved police, hospital, and morgue staff and highlighted gaps in notifying the family.
