In New Orleans, emergency room doctors report more than twenty injuries from mechanical bull riding at Western clubs. Most patients are men with minor injuries like bruises and broken collars, often presenting the day after rides prompted by the Urban Cowboy craze.
Polaris Vocational Center trustees voted to remove electronic games and pinball machines from the cafeteria gameroom including Space Invaders. A few parents protested, citing gambling concerns, while the board said the machines were not the best use of public space. Proceeds were to be donated to student clubs for competition expenses. No removal deadline was set.
Washington (UPI) Ronald Reagan and John Anderson may debate an empty chair if Carter skips the September 21 Baltimore event. The League of Women Voters ruled Anderson eligible, while Carter insists on one on one if Reagan attends. Network executives expect large viewership. Carter and Ford criticized the decision.
Reagan sought to mend fences with black leaders in Cleveland saying his past silence was pride not shame and vowing a special minority liaison as president. He touted Move on Reagan and contrasted his record with Carter's claim of appointing more black officials in California. The remarks followed criticism over neglecting NAACP invited speaking and came amid a campaign swing through Philadelphia Chicago and Milwaukee.

An early morning blast at 2932 Pearl Avenue leveled the two story J and J Lounge and damaged three nearby businesses in Lorain. Firefighters say the building contained no known occupants and the blaze burned over three hours. Investigators from the fire prevention bureau are probing the cause, with gas lines cited as a factor.
Telegraph line reports Teleprompter Inc begins cable service in Lorain County with John Pitts first paying customer at 6989 Root Road. Three other nearby homes will test the system as programming starts. Company aims to serve 55 to 60 percent of 5800 households as lines expand in three phases toward year end.
The Elyria Police Patrolmen's Association and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 40 will draft a letter asking Police Chief Paul A. Brand to resign after a heavy no confidence vote by officers. The unions criticized leadership gaps and officers laid off on August 1 while Brand was away. They will send the letter to Mayor Keys, Safety Director Hoagland, and Brand, with no new vote planned.
