Authorities report 106 Tupamaro guerrillas and five other inmates escaped Punta Carretas prison in a nine hour tunnel crawl ending in a neighboring house. Raul Sendic among those at large, government vows to use full force to recapture fugitives and suppress the escape.
Amid unrest Jacksonville starts a two phase desegregation busing plan affecting 55 000 of 123 000 students with a future tier raising to 75 000 in 1972 while Nashville Orange County and Ohio districts implement or adjust desegregation routes and schedules as teachers return and face challenging tasks.
Lorain County Community College considers Stanley J Trupp as top candidate for development and institutional research director. Trupp, 35, heads fundraising at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and would receive a three year contract at $18 500 a year. Cirigliano, an Oberlin member, notes the board may not combine development and public information duties, while board chairman Richard Dessich declines to comment until formal action.

Three Ohio Edison workers were injured when an electrical flash at a Elyria substation caused power outages to hundreds of homes. William McQuate, Rocky Luvera, and Theron King were treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital with burns ranging from first to second degree. King was later released. The incident occurred south of Ely Stadium at Oberlin Road and West Avenue, and officials described the flash as an electrical arc rather than an explosion.
Cambodian police investigated a failed assassination bid on U S Ambassador Emory C. Swank after a riderless bicycle with a plastic explosive was pushed into his path as he rode past in a limousine. The bomb weighed 10 to 20 pounds, and a youth about 18 fled the scene.

A BAC 111 charter jet with 121 West Germans aboard attempted to land on a highway after takeoff from Hamburg. The craft struck an overpass, burst into flames, killing 21, injuring 38 seriously, 59 with minor injuries, and leaving 3 missing. Pilot Reinhold Huels was seriously hurt as the plane skidded along the Autobahn five miles north of the airport. The flight operated by Painter National Charter Co for Pan Europa Travel carried vacationers to Malaga, Spain. Investigations by German and British aviation authorities were announced with BAC experts joining the probe.
