National Guardsmen and Alaska State troopers began recovering 111 victims after a 727 jetliner struck Chilkoot Mountain near Juneau. Bad weather slowed the operation as wreckage scattered over two square miles, with a temporary morgue set up in Juneau and three refrigeration units obtained for the remains.
In a Gallup survey of 1,054 voters across 300 communities, President Nixon held leads over each of his three main rivals Edmund Muskie Edward Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey in potential matchups. Nixon polled 42 percent to Muskie 36 Wallace 11 and 11 percent undecided in the Nixon Muskie pairing. In Nixon Kennedy Nixon 43 Kennedy 38 Wallace 10 and 9 undecided. In Nixon Humphrey Nixon 43 Humphrey 37 Wallace 11 and 9 undecided. A separate Berkeley report noted a 6.34 magnitude quake near Sakhalin.
A dawn raid at Alabama International Motor Speedway camp ground led to the arrest of 200 members of the Outlaws motorcycle gang on 25 to 30 charges. State officials say the group assaulted and robbed race fans, with gunfire from rifles, shotguns and pistols.
Wayne State University heart specialist Dr Ignatios J Voudoukis says a simple ice water test can detect hardening of the arteries by measuring the rise in blood pressure during brief hand immersion. He notes the test helps separate high blood pressure patients who have arteriosclerosis from those who do not and guides treatment.
Traffic accidents claimed seven lives per hour during the Labor Day weekend as Americans used highways. The National Safety Council projected 600 to 700 traffic deaths and 24,000 to 28,000 injuries, with 612 deaths noted in 1970. Ohio reported 21 highway deaths by late yesterday and five other weekend fatalities statewide.
Humid conditions prevail with partly sunny skies today and a high of 85 to 90. Thunderstorms are possible tonight and tomorrow with variable cloudiness and continued warmth. The extended outlook shows chances of storms through Friday and a slight cooldown on Friday.
