How early TV shows were preserved before video tape
In the early era of live television, kinescope recording captured broadcasts by filming a TV monitor. The process saved some shows and news events before 1956, but results were poor and kinescopes deteriorated quickly. Only recently have networks and stations begun transferring kinescope copies to video tape for lasting archives.
