Saigon rocked by massive satchel blast in Cholon

A satchel TNT explosion in Saigon's Cholon district killed at least eight and possibly 13, with dozens more feared buried under rubble. U.S. forces reported clashes, killing Viet Cong guerrillas and capturing suspects as rescue teams cleared wreckage of two buildings. Authorities blamed Viet Cong terrorists and noted intensified attacks around Saigon with ongoing operations and arrests.

Marine Lance Corporal Kellogg slain in Vietnam quarters

Gregory James Kellogg 20 a Marine lance corporal and husband of Carol Kellogg of Lorain was shot to death in his Quang Nam Province quarters. Kellogg died of a gunshot wound not listed as killed in action. He met Carol Cozzolino of Admiral King High School in Watertown New York. they married in Lorain April 13 and he returned to duty two weeks later arriving in Vietnam May 5 with his maintenance battalion. Carol, 17, received a telegram and earlier a letter from Kellogg describing a near encounter with the Viet Cong. The Pentagon provided limited details and no immediate confirmation of an inquiry.

Freighter and Turnpike Greet Two Thunderstorm Landings

Two pilots faced distress from storms overnight. William Borell, 40, landed a single engine plane on the Ohio Turnpike near Amherst and damaged a wing by high wires but was unhurt. A Selfridge AFB helicopter landed on a Buffalo bound freighter in Lake Erie after thunderstorm trouble, crew later helped rescue six aboard the stranded vessel Atomic near Port Mafiland Ont.

Ford layoff follows welding glove dispute at Lorain plant

About 1,200 production workers were laid off at Ford Motor Co. Lorain assembly after a walkout by welders from Local 425 of the United Auto Workers. President Thomas Batchko blamed company actions in issuing new gloves and reissuing old washed gloves which stiffened.

Czechs seek talks on slow Soviet troop pullout

Prague reports growing pressure as Alexander Dubcek calls the central committee to discuss the gradual withdrawal of Soviet troops. Bulgarian paper doubts rapid Warsaw Pact pullout from Czechoslovakia

Cleveland transplant's condition is very good

Cleveland officials defended heart transplant patient Dellett H. Lawson as very good and satisfactory. Lawson, 30, received a new heart Wednesday during a 12 hour operation at the Cleveland Clinic. Twelve hours later he sat up briefly and told his wife he felt fine. His wife said the family faced months of worry and prayed for this moment.

Lorain Port Authority expansion faces uphill county vote

Lorain County voters will decide in November whether to join the Lorain Port Authority’s expansion plan. If approved, the authority would grow from eight to twelve members and levy a 0.24 mill tax across the county to finance broader port facilities and bonds up to 15 million dollars. Lorain Vermilion won t be included.
