Lima Ohio October 30 The 35 ton snow cruiser carrying Rear Admiral Richard E Byrd works to back out of a mud filled creek bed near Pine Run Ohio and resume its voyage toward Boston. Diesel engines aid the recovery as rain hampers progress.
County commissioners authorized up to 2013 for a WPA project on Quarry Road three miles south of the South Am herst corporation line. County Engineer Harry L. Dunham will use force account and hire Henry Hart to apply cold tar and drug press ment, with about one mile to begin immediately and completion hoped for this winter with resume next spring.
The Ohio forecast calls for cloudy skies and slight cooling after light rains along the lake. A low pressure center sits over the Lake Region while high pressure remains over the Rocky Mountain Plateau and New England. Showers sprawl from the Upper Mississippi Valley to the Great Lakes with snow in Colorado and Wyoming. Subfreezing readings extend from the Dakotas and Minnesota toward New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle.
Autopsy jury returned an open verdict on Cait Bivens death after Ernest Pleicn Pletch known as Lochimar of the Air confessed to kidnapping and killing Bivens during a Brookfield to Shelby county flight. Prosecutors say he killed in self defense as the plane went down. Pletch faces murder charges across Macon Shelby and Linn counties while Brookfield residents demand answers. The suspect was captured near Bloomington after fleeing Indy flight.
William C McCuistion testified before the Dics committee that Harry Bridges West Coast labor leader obeyed party leaders and addressed a 1936 Madison Square Garden sea men’s rally. He named Tommy Ray Roy Hudson and David Leeds as organizers and said funds were supplied for Bridges Curran assisted NMU during a New York waterfront strike.
Hundreds of Miria children prepared costumes for the municipal Hallowe'en parade. About 3,000 are expected to march starting 7 30 p m from Broad Street and West Avenue, proceeding along Broad Street East Avenue Second Street to Ely Park. Prizes donated by Elsha merchants will honor winners in several classes. An entertainment program follows the parade with cider and doughnuts for marchers.
Weekend accidents killed 12 Ohioans including James McKinney Deer Park 39 Fred Watson 27 and other victims near Cincinnati and in Smithville New Straitsville Greenfield Ashtabula and Dayton. A tug capsized near Ashtabula harbor drowning two men and an 18 month old daughter died in a separate house fire. Frank Campbell 6 Mason died in a basement stair accident.
A protest to the Soviet Union grows over its treatment of U S merchantman City of Flint now reported leaving Murmansk for a German port with an American crew of 41 aboard. Danish lookouts monitor the Baltic approach as Tass reports its departure.
Congressman Chester Bolton will be buried in Cleveland Tuesday after dying Sunday at Lakeside Hospital at age 37. Flags in Ohio and Washington were at half mast. Bolton rose from Lyndhurst village councilman to state senator and ten years in the U S House. Funeral services will be at Trinity Episcopal Church with Bishop Tucker and Dean Emerson officiating.
County Commissioner G Dunn will discuss the proposed quarter mill levy for courthouse repairs at a Loram League of Women Voters meeting at Loram High School Auditorium. The event is listed as an official community forum.
A. S. Ormsby announces two new chairmen and two assistants for Elyma Community Chest. Mrs. J. T. Fawcett will lead schools with Mrs. A. L. Patrick as assistant. Mrs. Henry N. Ingels chairs hospitals with Hazel West as assistant. Campaign runs November 13 to 21.
Word reached Elyria as the Chronicle Telegram went to press of the death at Westlace Texas of Dell Cleveland a former Elyria businessman. Death was sudden due to a heart attack.
The British steamer Malabar of 7,976 tons was sunk in the Atlantic by a German submarine yesterday. Five men in the engine room were killed. seventy survivors were landed at a port in western England. The ship, en route from the United States to England with general cargo, had no lifeboats before the attack. Captain H. H Armstrong was master.
Scott, 76, Wakeman's oldest merchant, died at home Sunday after a weeklong illness. A 52 year local businessman, he ran a farm machinery business and a general store he built fifty two years ago. Born October 10 1865 in Florence Township Erie County. Survived by one son, Limen of Cincinnati, and four grandchildren. Funeral plans by Lt Gerber Funeral Home. body at residence.
Howard R. Butler was moved from Elhria Memorial Hospital to his home at 800 Pass Avenue to continue recovery from a stroke suffered October 20. Report says his condition is gradually improving and he is not yet allowed visitors, according to his private nurse.
Berlin reports Hitler held talks with Hermann Goering and Wilhelm Keitel after conferences with military leaders. Goering’s recent statements urged a large air assault on Britain as reconnaissance flights over naval bases increase. Hitler, staying near Berchtesgaden, may inspect garrisons and training grounds as the front line remains unchanged.
Paris reports a cold weekend on the western front with snow flurries in the Saar Valley and Vosges mountains near the Swiss border. French forces repulsed enemy local attacks and artillery drove German efforts to construct new forward positions amid sub zero winds and heavy rain.
A new election rule requiring booth workers to be residents of their precinct has forced a reshuffling of staff. Officials report most changes done, but a few precincts still lack satisfactory assignments balancing worker competency with party loyalty and avoiding sidelining active party workers.
A fishing boat crew reported that a Coast Guard search followed a plane fire off Pedro Point. The aircraft crashed on the beach five miles south of Fort Funston and burned. Two persons parachuted into the sea and disappeared. Coast Guard boats and planes were deployed to search the area.
A dynamite blast near Rock Springs Wyoming killed five schoolboys aged 7 to 12 who sought rabbits in mining hills. The blast left a gaping hole and blood stained clothes as the boys reportedly used dynamite as a target after failing to find game. Sheriff J Dankowski stated the bundle of explosives likely caused the fatal accident.
Six year old Georgine Kalisewski riding with 27 year old Leo Kalisewski of 210 16th street was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital for severe head and face lacerations after a collision on Route 37 about six miles north of Elyria. A second collision near Oberlin and Crosler roads caused minor damage to two cars. weitere incidents follow with minor damage to other motorists on nearby routes.
New York city reports the death of Alice Brady forty, noted star of light opera comedy drama and the movies after a long illness. She rose to fame as a comedienne and won the 1938 Academy Award for Old Chicago. Funeral services will be private.
