President Hoover, returning from Indianapolis, delivers a fierce critique of Roosevelt’s economic program. He rallies 22,000 in Indianapolis and outlines tariff shifts, immigration limits, and rail regulation, accusing Roosevelt of evasions and “new deal” promises while defending existing power and foreign loan stances.
Forecast for Ohio calls for partly cloudy skies and colder temperatures tonight with light rain along the lake shore. Sunday will be fair but cooler with a sharp drop in temperatures in the extreme eastern portion.
In California progressivism, a 20 year influence on public careers, becomes a central issue in the presidential contest. Senator Hiram Johnson, backing a Democratic candidate for the first time, harshly attacks the Hoover administration and urges voters to support Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Gov Albert C Ritchie of Maryland denounced Republican tactics and Hoover policy in a Democratic response to Hoover’s visit. He urged change, decried prohibition, accused Ford of pressuring workers, and pledged 25 percent spending cuts with a Democratic administration. About 15 000 inside Cadie Tabernacle and 56 900 outside attended. Hoover drew 22 000 inside and 56 000 outside at Butler University Field House.
Two fires in Columbus last night and today caused about $10,000 in losses. Robert Pennell and his family were left homeless when their house burned down. A garage and two trucks were destroyed at contractor E T Jenkins residence.
About 16 000 attendees at Alva Oyler farm near Hebron witnessed Lester Anthony of Paulding County win the standing stalk corn husking crown with 1467.78 pounds and earn Ohio representation in the national contest in Albany on November 10. A London railroader placed first in the shock husking with 1138.5 pounds, boosting Madison county's Wilbur Brown to county and state honors. other top finishers included Everett King Coshocton county second 1395 pounds and Alva Weise Madison third 1391.3 pounds.
Howard L. Rawdon superint endent of the Oberlin Schools was elected president of the Northeastern Ohio Teachers Association at its Cleveland meeting. He becomes the eighth Lorain County resident to hold the post since 1869. Rawdon has led Oberlin Schools for 25 years and served on the association's executive committee. Other officers include H H Turner vice president B F Stanton executive secretary and Miss Hazel Fitzgerald secretary. Lorain County educators who previously chaired the association are listed from 1875 to 1922.
The Lorain County Christian Endeavor Union closed its session at 7:30 PM in the Church of Christ with song and devotions. Officers were installed by Rev Herman Klahr, and 125 Endeavors attended the banquet featuring Cotton Blossom Singers.
Palo Alto dispatch reports President Hoover has made no definite plans to visit his Stanford home before the November election. Will Henry, uncle of Mrs. Hoover, told United Press today.
Hutchinson Kansas October 29 Attorneys for Mrs Marion Edwards Shouse wife of the nationally known Democrat Jouett Shouse filed her divorce petition with Walter Mead district court clerk.
In accordance with policy to stock woods and streams 1006 small basa were distributed Thursday in the Black River for re stock ing. Present were William Holcomb Grafton John Lindlsey Sandusky Edward Walker J B Johnson and Frank Henke Elyria who oversaw the distribution as part of a joint effort with the state department.
In a Cincinnati campaign event Ohio Republicans and Democrats traded criticism as David Ingalls, the youthful Republican candidate for governor, pledged to remove the state clemency board and criticized Governor White’s tax and labor policies. He warned of a rising government cost and a large public debt, while a state highway official disputed his figures. White pressed his re election bid in Cleveland and Vice President Curtis addressed a Canton crowd on tariffs and wage competition.
The Elyria Y M C A boys division schedules a full week of activities led by Robert Goacher. Highlights include handicraft and life saving classes, Hi Y club meetings, an airplane model club, beginners swimming, stamp club, sailboat model group, Friendly Indians Class, and a Saturday hike, with events daily from Monday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.
The Hallowe'en parade committee led by Chief E J Stankard announces parade rules for Monday at 7 PM. Forming on West Ave and Second and Third streets, it proceeds north on West Ave to Broad, east to East Ave, south to Third, west to Middle Ave, north to City Park. Numerous school groups and organizations are listed, with restrictions on Broad Street traffic and Middle Avenue Cheapside parking.
A grand jury will investigate the death of Mrs. Charles Hopkins 71 La Porte who died at Memorial Hospital after being struck by a truck driven by Lee Hall Ashland as she crossed Butter nut Ridge road. The sheriff said the driver isn’t held. the case is a formality for the grand jury. Survivors include her husband two sons Alfred and Arthur and two stepdaughters Ella Rundle and Sadie White. Funeral services set for 2 p m Monday at Sadre Funeral Home with Rev EK Bond. Burial in La Porte Cemetery.
Cleveland police report the second suspect in a theft from an elderly couple is Joseph Pristow, 22, who claimed he hidden $286 in a garage. Louis Wart, an ex convict, was nabbed in a Wickliffe attic. A third man reportedly fled. Detectives have recovered $1141 of the $11,500 spoils to return to Mr and Mrs Frank Baker.
Albany N Y October 29 Governor Franklin D Roosevelt held an Old Home reunion with Alfred E Smith at the executive mansion, seeking to unite New England Democrats. Smith assured that grievances of his supporters were wiped out, and Roosevelt planned trips to Groton and Boston with a possible Portland side trip as they discussed the campaign.
Paris Oct 29 An elaborate French plan to cut military strength and seek US backing for world security was outlined by Premier Herriot to the chamber, with a 430 to 20 vote of confidence. The proposal reduces compulsory service from 12 to nine months and divisions from 20 to 12, under six conditions including international control and regional mutual aid pacts to deter aggression. The plan aims to align with Locarno and create a force from national contingents, subject to international rules.
Five men were wounded on Pineville main street before the courthouse in a feud between Lee and McGeorge families. George Lee was seriously shot in the chest while Stephen Lee and others were hit in the shoulder leg and hands. Witnesses say elder Lee fired first with a rifle as the group fled to nearby cars. Police describe the clash as a feud flare-up with more than 30 shots fired.
