Urge tolerance at religious forum in Cleveland

In Cleveland a crowd of more than seven thousand filled a forum debating religion with three orthodox speakers and an agnostic. Clarence Darrow argued against miracles while Rev Dr Charles DeBow Quin O Brien and Robin Barnett advocated faiths, stressing community tolerance and intellectual integrity. The event closed in recognition of four schools of thought on stage.

The Elyria Chamber of Commerce launches twenty old cartwheel dollars bright and early tomorrow. Each silver dollar, encased in a cardboard card, carries slogans urging spending now and letting dollars work. Participants register the first ten transactions as the cartwheel travels.

Peters Wins Fight Over Compensation For Husband’s Death

Mrs Louise Peters secures a Supreme Court ruling in Ohio Lorain County that she was denied compensation after her husband Forrest Peters died. The case found the Ohio Public Service Company self insured and the Industrial Commission erred in denying benefits. Peters had sued after dilation of the heart linked to strenuous lamp trimming work for the company.

Ohio Route 20 Spending Tops One Year Totals

The Ohio State Highway Department reports about 13 million dollars is being spent or planned on 12 through highways this year. Major allotments go to US Route 20 entering Ohio at Conneaut and running to Indiana with 740 thousand dollars. the Lincoln Harding Highway. and the Ohio River road among others. Blaze Destroys Home Near Elyria After Water Shortage

Fire destroyed the home of William Lent, two miles south of Elyria near the Grafton road, after a daybreak blaze started from a smoldering roof area. Sheriff Adams blamed a defective chimney flue and noted Lent had limited water supply, hindering efforts to fight the fire. The Lent family had struggled to obtain water from a distance of a quarter mile.

Legion Post 12 Holds Busy Meeting Sets Budget and Plans

Elyria Post No 12 American Legion met at the Legion Home on October 25 with Dr A R Agate presiding and officers in place. Committees were named to study welfare for ex-service men and eleven member teams were formed to urge paid up dues by the eleventh hour of the eleventh month. The annual minstrel show and municipal Halloween celebration were dropped in favor of a November 11 banquet at 6 pm. A membership drive targets 600 by 1922. actual paid membership stood at 399 with a 30 percent state quota gain. A masquerade Halloween party and Legion Corps escort to Ravenna were announced. a report on the 11-member teams and budget actions followed.

Owner And Wife Lose Lives As Ship Goes Down

New York October 29 the Henry R Mallory of the Circle Line returned with six survivors from the freighter Barbadoes which sank in a gale off the Delaware Capes early Sunday. The losses include E G Valverdi owner of the vessel and his wife. Captain L W Hough of the Barbadoes recounted a grim tale of an unidentified tanker that failed to aid after their lifeboat signaled for help.

Wealthy Galva Banker Is Safe After Disappearance

Earl Yocum millionaire banker and president of Yocum State Bank returned to Galva unharmed after vanishing last Saturday. He drove from Atkinson about 20 miles away to the Porte Cochere of his home, with no word given to authorities. Cashier A E Anderson confirmed the safe return and offered no further details.

Six Yegs Slug Bank's Patrons Steal $8,000

Six bandits robbed the Fairfield National Bank in Lancaster Ohio taking about 5000 to 10000 dollars after slugging bank president H E Peters 76 cashier M S Pond and Rev W W Seaman. The car used carried a Dayton license and was later recovered. Authorities sought the robbers as National Guardsmen and deputies searched central and southern Ohio.

Widow seeks 25000 from farm owner in death by horse incident

Anna Daly, widow and administrator of John Daly’s estate, sues John Clark of La Grange for 25000 in a common pleas case alleging Daly was trampled and dragged 40 feet by a frightened team on Clark’s farm on April 28 1930. Daly died May 3 at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Lancaster schools closed due to new infantile paralysis cases.
