Olmsted board learns Robert A. Van Auken will step down as North Olmsted Schools superintendent. Citing a degenerating physical condition and political pressure, the 60 year old will leave in mid January, though his retirement date is set for March 15. He has led since 1965 and says he cannot meet the job’s physical demands. He sought to avoid influencing the Nov 8 operating levy and board elections.

Ford recalls 50,000 1977 models for fuel line clamp issue
Ford Motor Co recalls 49,700 LTD II Thunderbird Mercury Cougar and Ranchero and F-series trucks with eight cylinder engines to replace a fuel line hose clamp. Improperly assembled clamps could leak fuel and pose fire risk. no fires or injuries reported. Vehicles built May 15 to June 16. Also recalling about 13,600 1978 F-series trucks to fix a steering part.

Trials Rescheduled for Amherst Pair
Trials of former Amherst Police Chief Arthur Koppenhafer and former Amherst Policewoman Carol Ramstead have been rescheduled. Ramstead, charged with felony theft, will now go to trial Nov. 29. Koppenhafer, charged with theft in office, a felony, will be tried starting Dec. 1. Trials for both had previously been scheduled for this week.

Energy-use standards eyed for home appliances
Washington reports a forthcoming energy law could require federal efficiency standards for refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washers, dryers, water heaters, room air conditioners, space heaters, TVs, ranges, humidifiers or dehumidifiers, central AC units, and home furnaces. Enforcement may allow citizen suits. standards take effect within 30 months of passage. Also proposed are $900 million in state grants for school and hospital insulation and $385 million in grants to help poor families insulate homes by 1980.

Confusion Over Elyria Street Name Changes Until 1977 Directory
Elyria residents face mixed street names after eight street reclassifications on the west side near West River Parkway. City Council approved July 1 changes shifting Lodi Street to Lake Avenue and renaming Lake Avenue to Gateway Boulevard among others. The Elyria Telephone Co. 1977 directory lists discrepancies, with 15 of 25 Lodi Street addresses showing new Lake Avenue numbers while 8 remain Lodi Street. Residents may correct listings next year by contacting the telephone company.
