President Roosevelt tours Hartford and Boston areas delivering a tax policy pitch. He seeks Connecticut electoral votes amid floods talk and calls for democracy in taxation while defending New Deal gains and warning against propaganda.
Governor Martin L. Davey, seeking re election as Ohio’s Democratic chief executive, will address audiences in Elyria at the Elks Auditorium at 7 PM and in Lorain at the Hotel Antlers at 9 PM. The Lorain County Democratic Executive Committee sponsors both talks.
Rain is expected across Ohio tonight with likely continuation into the eastern portions Friday morning. Temperatures will fall, bringing a colder start to the day in eastern areas.
About 400 Democrats gathered at the Hotel Antlers in Lorain for a banquet hosted by the Federated Democratic Women’s Clubs of Lorain County. Speakers included Congressman Don W. Harter and Charles West, with Harter urging support for the Roosevelt administration and criticizing Republican challenger Carl Sheppard on mortgage rates and policy.
Common Pleas Judge Guy B5 Findley ruled today that Nancy Bell M Hakes, nine, remains with her foster parents Mr. and Mrs. H A Hakes of Oberlin. The writ of habeas corpus filed by the child's mother, Mrs. Josephine Hunitsberger, 30, of Akron, was denied. The Hakes say they legally adopted the girl when she was a day old and raised her with consent from hospital authorities. The mother contends she did not know of the daughter until recently and had been separated since birth. the court paid heed to the child welfare and noted the mother has no other children.
A radio schedule lists speakers Gov. Davey at 7:00 and 7:15 with Gov. Davey appearances across WHK WGAR WTAM and WBAL stations. Gov. Davey and Alfred E. Smith are noted with Frank Knox and W. E. Luthy also on the air at varying times.
Miss Helen Talcott a 23 year old graduate nurse from Ashtabula is among 23 patients at Gates Hospital for Crippled Children receiving care for infantile paralysis. She contracted the disease after a mosquito bite at a Four Club camp and is expected to recover fully, with bed rest and treatment continuing for months.
Pittsburgh Oct 22 The Carnegie Illinois Steel Corp said it might raise wages for its 100000 employees after further collective bargaining. A blanket raise of 1.12 dollars a day could not be considered now but the management said it would enter negotiations for a compromise agreement. It cited current economic conditions in explaining why it cannot meet the committee’s full request at this time.
A 300 strong crowd gathered at the Lorain County Republican Women’s Club dinner at the Masonic Temple Lorain. Speakers included Mrs Frank Horgan of Washington DC daughter of ex Governor Morrow of Kentucky and Mrs Chester Bolton wife of Congressman Bolton of Cleveland. Mrs Horgan denounced government waste and a huge spending spree, criticized unconstitutional agencies and enacted laws, urged voters to back men who uphold the Declaration of Independence and American Constitution. Mrs Bolton gave insider views on Congress and its perceived helplessness as the 8 year Republican House member spoke.
More than 100 Elyria business men and women are expected at a dinner meeting at the First Congregational Church tomorrow night. L H Buisch of the National Cash Register Company merchandising division will speak on retail problems, a talk geared to those in the retail trade.
Governor Landon, ill with a sore throat, was kept in bed aboard his special train en route to Oklahoma City. Dr Frank Schuster of El Paso advised rest to avoid spreading infection while J Reuben Clark urged the crowd to excuse Landon from appearances due to fatigue on the strenuous campaign.
Governor Landon denounces federal regimentation of homes lives and jobs warning of a drifting toward centralized power. He contrasts the American system with “the opposite system” and pledges to stand against all comers defending liberty as cattlemen in the West echo his critique of grazing acts and bureaucratic overreach.
DETROIT Oct 22 Senator James Couzens gravely ill with uremic poisoning will undergo a very serious operation at Harper Hospital this afternoon. Dr Hugo Freund, his personal physician, announced the plan.
Elyria Memorial Hospital will honor two Cleveland brothers, David L. Johnson and Arthur E. Johnson, for freeing the hospital from bonded indebtedness. A dinner tonight in the hospital dining room will welcome the guests of honor. Mrs. Arthur B. Johnson will share in the tribute while Mrs. David L. Johnson cannot attend due to a family illness. Registrations at noon showed 103 expected attendees including trustees city officials and Community Chest members. Smythe will preside as E F Allen delivers the principal task, with brief remarks from Dr. J. T. Fawcett and Miss Hazel West. the Johnson School of Nursing also participates.
Six hundred fifty delegates have registered for the ninth annual Ohio Independent Baptists convention at the First Baptist church with more expected today. Ruth Hege announced her sister Esther Hege will resign as Staten Island Hospital nurse to study in Europe and work as a missionary doctor in the Belgian Congo, with the association supporting her. Officers elected include E. Willetts president and Frank L. Smith missionary committee chair. editor position made permanent with Dr. Howard C. Fulton to speak (No 3 Continued on Page 2).
London reports Mrs. Simpson expects a divorce from Ernest Simpson soon and rejects any marriage to King Edward under present terms. Friends say she would not be queenly enough for royal status and the king would not risk embarrassment to his position. They call any marriage talk foolish and note her social standing and practicality. A divorce decree nisi is expected if granted, with possible shortening of the usual six month interval for absolute divorce.
The United States Weather Bureau at Columbus forecast colder weather and continued rain across the state. Light rain was expected today into tonight with falling temperatures. Predicted high around 40 degrees for Saturday. this morning’s low near 50. No snow expected during the present cold spell.
Elyria and Lorain County students will have a day off as schools close for the Northeastern Ohio Teachers Association annual meeting in Cleveland. Teachers will attend sessions both tomorrow and Saturday. Eleven county educators from Lorain plus Oberlin College and Conservatory members will participate in programs. Two Elyria High School students and two Brownhelm students will perform in the all district band concert tomorrow.
About six hundred employees and families attended the annual Safety Meeting at Elyria High School Auditorium. Harry Sain of the Industrial Commission of Ohio spoke on safety and praised General Industries for its strong safety campaign. He congratulated Schmittgen Kohler and plant employees for their record, saying the group has won the safety trophy for two campaigns and could keep it permanently with another win.
