Cold air mass covers nation with frigid temps rising soon

A cold air mass envelops the United States as forecasters predict dimmer temperatures in the next day or two. Warm air from the west is expected to push thermometers upward today and tomorrow though many areas will stay near freezing. Temperatures in the Midwest New England mid Atlantic Great Plains and southern regions cling to 20s and 30s with light snow in extreme north Michigan and scattered showers in the southern mountains. Chest Drive Starts With Parade of Stars in Elyria

J E Glass campaign chairman welcomed workers at Elyria Community Chest kickoff night in the Elyria High School auditorium. He named division heads and introduced a run down committee led by Don Myers to chase rumors harming the drive. County visitors tour Findlay Farmers Club event

Council Acts On Petitions For Improvements

City council last night acted on several petitions for street improvements. Residents on Harwood street from Hamilton to Poplar sought a storm sewer as the first step toward paving the street, tied to the $1.5 million trunk sewer plan funding laterals by assessments to benefitting property owners. Engineering plans were ordered. Also referred were requests to extend water lines on Warden avenue and Dilworth street with cost estimates to be prepared. Paving petitions for 16th and 17th streets from Middle to West avenues were sent to the engineering department. Councilman Ralph Terry urged purchasing property at Cedar and Second streets to widen the intersection to ease traffic, with safety committee review.

Costly Fire At Chardon Destroyed King Central Grocery

A coal furnace explosion sparked a three hour blaze in Chardon destroying King Central Grocery and six nearby businesses on a century old block. Estimated damage around 100000. Fire units from Burton and Painesville townships helped prevent spread to a drug store. smoke damaged many second floor tenants including a real estate office and a jewelry shop.

Brush Beryllium weighs closing Lorain plant over poisoning cases

The Brush Beryllium Co. considers shutting its Lorain plant after an Ohio Health Dept X ray survey reveals two more beryllium poisoning cases locally, bringing total afflicted residents to 11 and three employees. The plant had suffered a $250,000 fire on Sept. 24, and president Benet Kjelleren says it would not be rebuilt if the community objects, though experts say the plant can be made safe.

Big Three Notify UN Council Over Berlin Blockade

Paris United States Britain and France told the United Nations Security Council that Russia is tightening the Berlin blockade as the council debates the crisis. Western officials said Moscow is stepping up actions to seal off Berlin while Berlin’s access by air remains. Ewing Elected Chairman of Draft Board

Elyria attorney Harold Ewing was named chairman of Selective Service Board No. 172 serving the Elyria area. He fills a vacancy created by Ross Ludwig’s ineligibility and prior chairmanship, with Ludwig remaining in the Officers Reserve Corps. Burglars Hit Local Jewelry Store and Offic es

Thieves entered Reger and Binninger Jewelry Co on the Century building's second floor and stole merchandise valued between 5000 and 8000 dollars. They also targeted four other second floor businesses, taking 1000 dollars of fountain pens and display items from the jewelry store, while safe valuables remained untouched. Police noted expert door opening, glove use, and no fingerprints, with insurance covering the loss.
