Explosion rocks U S airlift plane near Gatow Berlin

British authorities reported a heavy explosion in the Russian zone near Gatow air field shook an American airlift plane. The pilot said anti aircraft fire hit him at 2000 feet after takeoff from Gatow. Contact was lost but later sources confirmed the blast caused the concussion. A full report will be flown back.

ECA to Need More Funds for 1949 European Recovery

Washington report states the Economic Cooperation Administration must seek a deficiency appropriation from Congress to cover European recovery authorizations for the first half of 1949. Edward T. Dickinson, ECA programs coordinator, would not estimate the extra funding at a news conference.

The Federal Security Agency reports 493 870 Americans died in 1947 an increase of 49 753 from the prior year. It marks the second lowest death rate on record despite the rise.

President Truman vows firm policy toward Soviet Union

President Truman told the American Legion he seeks a basis for real peace with the Soviet Union and urged Moscow to show long range peaceful purposes. He defended the Vinson proposal as not hampering allies and said the United States will act to advance peace within the UN framework. He cited a fog of distrust between allies and Russia and pledged firmness until assurances are given. Truman traveled from Washington with Mrs. Truman and daughter Margaret.

One Man Killed In Gas Plant Explosion Near Detroit

Air Force calls for 10 000 veteran volunteers amid Berlin airlift

Accident Fatal To Ohio Woman Legislator

Mrs. Margaret E. Barkley a Republican member of the Ohio House of Representatives from Cuyahoga County died in Trumbull Memorial Hospital from injuries after a car crash on route 322 near Colebrook. Her husband survived with minor injuries. Elected in November 1946 she was to run again on November 2 and worked on welfare and education bills.
