Liquid protein fad fades after deaths cited by FDA and CDC
Liquid protein once swept drug stores at $12 a bottle but associations with as many as 16 deaths led the FDA to seek warning labels. By 1979 sales plummeted, stores stocked few bottles at $7.77, while the CDC researches linked several myocarditis deaths to prolonged use. Dr. Harold Sours notes most victims were women aged 25 to 44 who used the diet for about five months.
