United Nations forces repelled probes on a 14 mile East Central Korea front and seized seven strategic heights on the Communist Winter line below Kumsong. The drive involved American Colombian and South Korean troops in a 12 hour assault with heavy artillery and air support.
Elyria Kiwanis mailed over 30 invitations to civic groups for a meeting next Wednesday October 17 at 8 PM in the Elyria Chamber of Commerce offices. Ernest Seabold Elyria Dairies manager and former Kiwanis president is named parade committee general chairman and will preside at the session, with others urged to attend if not invited.
A minor ore fire broke out shortly before 1 p m at the Harshaw Chemical plant in the 10 building. Firemen from No 2 station quickly extinguished it. The cause was not immediately determined, an employee said.
Willis C. Hall of East Liverpool, chairman of the Labor League for Taft, said the group would back Sen. Robert A. Taft for the Republican presidential nomination. Hall added the league would work for Taft in every possible way.

James P. Finnegan former internal revenue collector surrendered to a U S marshal in St Louis posting a 5000 dollar bond. He signed the bond in the office of U S Commissioner Edwin Bean and refused to comment on a five count indictment from a federal grand jury. He called the date of surrender unlucky and asserted his innocence after returning from Washington where he appeared before a House Ways and Means subcommittee.
Cyril F Richards was appointed vice president and dean of Denison University by Acting President A Blair Knapp. Richards, a Linfield College graduate from Mc Mainville Oregon, has served at Denison since 1937.
Columbus Ohio State Finance Director Herbert D Defenbacher said tax collections for the first quarter ended Sept 30 were 5883858 higher than the same period last year. He noted income exceeded expenses by about 4 million dollars.
Meat packers and feeders blame government rules for a beef shortage that has nearly vanished from mess tables for the armed forces. A spokesman for the American Meat Institute said 600 packers regret the situation and cannot bid for beef for the armed forces. A feeder called the outlook uncertain.

They cited three factors including Communist reluctance to continue fighting and a U N plan for a written truce boundary. U N and communist liaison officers agreed to meet to settle administrative matters before plenary sessions resume at Panmunjom.

The Western Automatic Machine Screw Company will start immediate construction on a 180000 square foot expansion costing about 2500000. R D Oldfield announces a contract with H K Ferguson Company for engineers and builders.
