In Cairo mass demonstrations supported by about 75 000 students and workers called for ejecting British troops from the Suez Canal Zone and scrapping the 1936 treaty. Two thousand students wrecked a shop and damaged vehicles downtown as police restored order after shops like Air Liquide were attacked.
Labor leaders C. Franklin Carr of the CIO and Russell Reisinger of AFL join the Elyna Community Chest drive executive committee for the October 15 kickoff. Frank Weil chairs the Industries Division with Henry R. Insh Don B. Kirkbride and Richard A. Stith leading division sections. A goal of 130157 dollars is set for a campaign running October 15 to 23.
Lorain county township trustees and clerks meet with county officials at 8 p m in the courthouse to review new highway laws. County Engineer Don E Patterson says rapid residential growth, new streets, paving, drainage, assessments are among issues facing trustees and road officials. The session will include the engineer, county commissioners, and the county prosecutor.
Harry C. Patterson, chairman of the Elyria Republican City Committee, announced a gathering of precinct committeemen, Elyria and Elyria Township Republicans, and candidates including for the board of education. The meeting is set for 8 p.m. October 1 in the directors’ room at Lorain County Savings and Trust Co.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson urged Egypt to accept a mutual plan to end the Anglo Egyptian dispute over the Suez Canal. He warned against leaving British forces in the zone and said a four power formula might be adjusted before presenting to Cairo. US diplomats expect a framework of international canal control with equal authority among the four powers.
Jefferson school pupils returned to heated classrooms yesterday after a day and a half of unexpected vacation. Superintendent L W Nicholas announced the temporary heating installation is overcome and functioning properly, following the razing of the old boiler room to make way for a new addition. Cold weather forced the suspension of classes on Monday and Tuesday morning.
Two men died in Portsmouth after injuries from accidents. Lucy Thompson, 22, of Barden, and Leroy McCarthy, 56, of Portsmouth, were reported injured September 16 and September 29 respectively. Thompson’s auto left Route 73. McCarthy’s motorcycle crash on an East side street.
The reinstatement of Jack Walker as South Amherst police chief will be appealed to the court of appeals after a common pleas ruling found insufficient cause for his dismissal. Walker was removed by Mayor Henry Garland last summer with village council support, then appealed to the common pleas court.
Senator John J. Williams pressured Secretary John W. Snyder to acknowledge tax scandals in the Internal Revenue Bureau as a House subcommittee questioned Snyder on irregularities in seven to eight of 64 tax collection districts. Williams noted prior letters and cited Finnegan’s April resignation and Schoeneman’s June departure as implicated.
Elyria District Catholic High School pulled its sponsorship of a charity bingo game after publicity criticizing the affair. Sheriff Carl Finegan announced the cancellation of any bingo events until the Ohio Supreme Court clarifies the Langman case. Local officials debated legality as Lorain County ordinances allow charity bingo with a $250 prize limit and local operation.
Elyria chapter released a final report on the flood disaster fund raised over three months totaling 1373.82 from 124 contributors amid national totals over four million dollars. Rehabilitation aid reached 10,684 of 23,322 affected families by mid September, with expenses at 1,398,113.71. Rising construction costs and salvage needs after flood stages boosted totals. 411 nurses volunteered 11,128 hours serving about 20,000 disaster victims. Since June 1 the Red Cross aided 25 disasters across 110 counties in twelve states, including the Jamaica hurricane and the Assault Valley flood.

UN and Communist liaison officers eyed a bridge over the Sachon River near Pan Mun Jom as a possible site for resumed cease-fire talks. The session opened in a tent, then moved to the bridge where both sides studied maps and noted details amid amiable exchanges.

Charles W. Gilliam aged 35, father of three, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital from a skull fracture when scaffolding collapsed on him during barn construction on Cooley road in Eaton township. He leaves a wife and four children, siblings and a large extended family. Funeral set for Friday at Sudro Curtis Funeral Home with burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
The Ohio State University faculty council denounces a rule requiring screening of all on campus speakers. With President Howard L. Bevis presiding, the council approves two prior resolutions urging reconsideration of the board of trustees order approved last month. Bevis did not vote.

A U S 2nd Division task force struck eight miles into Communist territory near Mundung along Heartbreak Ridge routing 3000 Chinese troops and damaging MIG fighters. The raid, aimed at ending the Ridge siege, returned safely at dusk with heavy casualties reported for the Chinese force.
A meeting is set for Monday October 29 at 8 p.m. in the Henrietta school to organize administration of the Arthur McGee family fund. Proceeds from a Friday benefit dance at the Palladium are expected to add about 500 dollars to the fund. James Ehrman chairs the fund. Chuck Heck turned over 3462 dollars and more is anticipated. The McGee fund currently totals near 7000 dollars for the father and three sons. The Mary Lee Tucker fund, separate from other sources, totals 7665 dollars and is now closed.
Elyria High School band director George Wilson announced the marching band will travel to Barberton on Friday to participate in the Elyria Barberton independent football contest. The Elyria Booster Club sponsors the trip with band members boarding charter buses at 3 15 pm.
Gus Hall, U S Communist leader, was escorted back into the United States under heavy guard after an escape attempt in Mexico. Extra highway patrols were sent into mining areas near Barnesville to curb property destruction as officials prepared hearings in Ohio and federal authorities reviewed the case. Hall crossed the border early this week and was taken to the immigration office.
The Ohio Conference of Seventh Day Adventists announced a state wide drive to collect clothing and food for Kansas flood victims. Ohio churches will assist as a relief truck departs October 14 from conference headquarters to visit major cities.
