Balanced rations boost egg production in laying hens

A. K. R. Winter of Ohio State University reports that with grain alone hens lay 60 to 80 eggs yearly, while adding protein concentrates raises output to 140 to 160 eggs. A diet of about 90 percent grains and 10 percent protein, plus oyster shell or limestone grit, green hay, water, and sunshine, forms the ideal setup. When prices shift, adapt rations but keep a balanced mix. Vitamin D comes from sunshine and certain feeds, ensuring proper poultry nutrition.

Government food program pushes vast farm signups

The government projects signups cover 11,791,427 acres of 12,541,000 in all states, with Nebraska reaching about 97 percent of its wheat acreage. The plan to buy 75 million dollars of dairy, poultry, meat, cotton, fruits, vegetables, and grains aims to aid 3.56 million relief families by creating new channels for producer distribution and broader consumption this winter. Washington economists warn that moving land from grain to pasture may reduce milk and meat output, noting historical data that harvested crops yield more livestock feed and that pasture shifts have slowed since 1890.
