Gang Lieutenant Shot to Death in Chicago
Chicago reports a ruthless gang czar linked to the slayings of two suspected informants. Gus Winkler and Edgar Lebensberger, big figures in a vast crime ring, were killed amid a federal war on crime. Winkler fell to 72 bullets before questioning on a $250,000 mail robbery. Lebensberger was found shot in his North Shore home. The deaths hint at a wider net of bank robberies, stolen bonds, and racketeering across midwestern cities tied to a powerful political protector. The broader mystery centers on the higher-ups directing the crime syndicate and shielding its leaders.
