Ohio farmers study hybrid corn yields and seed production
Ohio State University extension agronomist HR D Lewis says within three to four years hybrid corn seed will be enough to plant about 500000 acres. This month 1409 farmers compare hybrid and standard corn yields, with at least 5 percent producing hybrid seed. Lorain County hosts fourteen comparison plots, and farmers statewide join in these trials aided by the Ohio Extension Service and the state experiment station. When harvested, expected acre yields will be disclosed.

Yields drop 10 to 25 percent in second generation, so choose local, well suited hybrids and test performance against local checks.
