Redistricting Outlines Lorain County Shift in Senate Map

Ohio Governor Gilligan proposed a reapportionment plan that expands the 13th Senate District to include all of Lorain County and large parts of Huron and Erie counties while moving Richland County out. Sen. Corts would face a race in a heavily Democratic Lorain area. The plan redraws Lorain’s two House districts to add a third.

Country Harvest Antiques draws crowds at Birmingham church

The Birmingham Methodist Church hosts the second annual Country Harvest of Antiques on the church green. A 90 year old Webber Market Wagon drawn by two draft horses rides the route to Vermilion River. The event features 24 antique displays and a barnyard of small farm animals to benefit the Birmingham Community Youth Center from 9 30 a m to 4 30 p m.

Coal miners walk out as contract expires across seven states

Wildcat strikes became legal when the contract expired at 12 01 a m. about 80 000 miners walked off. UMW leader Sylvester Lorenzo says workers seek a new contract after three years. Talks pause but strikes continue with no interim agreement. Negotiations resume. policy committee to meet in New York Monday.

Dockers in East Gulf ports strike nationwide shutdown

Dock workers from Maine to Texas walked out over a guaranteed income dispute ending the AFL CIO ILA contract with the New York Shipping Association. All 45 000 members across East and Gulf ports joined the strike as West Coast ports had already been idle since July 1.

Man acquittal in court leads to fresh assault charges

Lorain 39 year old Robert Guest was acquitted in Lorain Municipal Court for assault and battery. He told police the accuser attacked him at the Montenero Club breaking a chair over his head. Guest was treated at St Joseph Hospital and returned to file charges against the assailant.

Tragedy Strikes Wakeman Family With Third Traffic Death

A 28 year old father Frank Slan ezka died in a one car crash near Wakeman minutes from home. He was thrown from the vehicle on Butler Road near the Erie Huron county line and died at the scene. His wife and infant daughter had died in prior accidents within two years. He worked as a process man at Harshaw Chemical Co in Elyria. Funeral services are in Gerber Funeral Home.

OEA to challenge school funding base and strike

The Ohio Education Association executive committee urged a court challenge to the property tax base used to fund state schools and asked authority to call a statewide teachers strike if the legislature fails to pass an acceptable education package.
