County leaders fear an October 7 cutoff of direct relief funds. Commissioner Oscar G Dunn warns 2,000 direct relief families and 590 WPA-assisted households face a collapse unless towns and townships assume duties. A meeting of municipal and township officers is set to plan shared relief efforts.
County Commissioner Oscar G Dunne and Relief Director Earie Duncan left for Columbus to meet Ohio FERA officials about a looming relief crisis. Subdivisions in the central relief area are told to cover medical rent clothing and fuel costs now with FERA to handle direct relief grocery orders until next Monday and possibly longer if funds hold. The county’s relief budget runs only to October with September allocations around 39 900 while the current offer is 12 521. all FERA projects except a canning center on Lakes avenue are closed, with about 9 percent more people deprived of relief employment hour by hour as the mattress factory and Lorain sewing center shut down.
The Elyria Chamber of Commerce board will meet Thursday night to consider appointing a new committee chairman after George Richwine's resignation. Other agenda items include membership prospects plans for the next membership forum and a report on a proposed WPA industrial survey.
A request to derail a city water contract led Common Pleas Judge Gus Bey and Judge D A Cook to arrange an outside judge for a future trial. The case centers on bids for pipe with National Tube Company linked to Lorain and a temporary injunction blocking awarding the contract. The city solicitor said no hearing date is set as the project remains stalled pending court action.
The Lorain County Board of Education will meet at 1 30 p m next Monday to finalize the school survey under the new School Foundation Law The survey is due for state certification by October 15 and is unlikely to recommend county system changes this year due to school-year complications The Foundation program will drive changes in the coming years including elimination of smaller schools and reorganization ahead of state requirements The meeting coincides with fall sessions of the County Council of Parent Teacher Associations at Penfield School in Penfield Township
Margaret March of Cleveland suffered a head injury and was badly shaken after a three car crash on Oberlin road near Stop 88 yesterday afternoon. Deputy Sheriffs Gerald Nau and Paul Chapman reported the incident. March was attempting to pass another vehicle when her car collided with C. A. Longbrake of Oberlin road and with a third car driven by Robert Leslie of Manchester New Hampshire.
New jurors reporting today for common pleas court jury duty include Charlotte Ruth of Vermilion Elizabeth Schneider of Lorain Beatrice Leimbach of Amherst Lena Towner of Lorain Charles Monroe of Sheffield Lake Kate Emmerich of Oberlin and A MccConnell of Wellington.
Chicago October 1 Frank Vitali grocery store owner confessed to hiring a friend to start a three story tenement fire that killed ten people including five children. Dichiara admitted he was to be paid 109 dollars for starting the blaze aimed at collecting 3990 dollars in insurance. The fire followed an explosion at midnight Sunday, trapping residents on the second and third floors. Several leapt to escape. seven others remained seriously injured.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Los Angeles for eight hours and toured the city after dedicating Boulder Dam. On a narrow rocky road through Charleston Hills the presidential car stalled three times, nearly toppled toward a 110 foot drop, and required careful maneuvers by aides before a turn was made. The journey followed a Nevada stop and included a mountain excursion with Mrs. Roosevelt and Harry Hopkins amid a light drizzle and small crowd.
American Adventist missionaries in Addis Ababa decide to remain at their posts to care for the wounded despite Italian air raids. Colorado Springs police detained Carl Kenneth Garrett after the body of fiancée Margaret Wilm was found face down in six inches of water under a bridge abutment in Fountain Creek. Authorities cited a fatal head wound and skull fracture, with Garrett claiming they argued Sunday night over a fraternity ring.

Columbus Ohio October 1 thirty two grade crossing elimination projects at an estimated cost of seven million nine hundred fifteen thousand dollars have been submitted to the Bureau of Public Roads in Washington. Highway Director John Jaster Jr says the program covers eighty three percent of Ohio’s federal work relief funding and will employ about two thousand four hundred six men for one year. Local communities and railroads share costs and rights of way while labor is drawn from federal re employment offices. Official start dates await Washington approval with tentative signings noted from W V Burk.
City Club members will discuss several proposed projects for the coming year at the regular meeting held at 7:00 p m Wednesday night at the YMCA. City officers have outlined a suggested program of projects to be presented to members.

Governor Daver wodar signed four bills from the special session of the 742nd General Assembly. One bill appropriated 41,954 dollars for operat ors of the House and Senate. COLUMBUS, Oct. 1 W. A. Siephens of Huron, former cashier of the Berlin Heights bank, was committed to the state penitentiary July 28, 1934 on charges of false entry and taking money. Parole records show his earlier parole was rescinded and continued to December 1935 for further board consideration. The December hearings will decide how long he must remain incarcerated.
