President Roosevelt pledged to avoid new taxes while trimming the prospective federal deficit for the current fiscal year. He revised the budget to cut expenditures to 7.732 million and boost revenue to 4.470 billion, reducing the red by about 1.246 billion as recovery and relief costs drive spending and later tax changes lift revenues.
Norman De Zak a 39 year old Cleveland Ohio flier with a long licensed flying career died when his aircraft motor failed and crashed in a vertical bank above Columbus Airport. The plane fell 400 feet and burned as about 1500 witnesses including his wife watched. De Zak's body was burned beyond recognition and will be sent to Cleveland for burial.
Mostly cloudy with light rain in the northern section and likely in the northeast eyeing Tuesday morning. Warmer conditions in the east and south tonight, then cooler Tuesday and Tuesday night across the state.

The incident halted river traffic at the deepest section and left authorities investigating the sudden collapse of one of the city’s oldest spans.

Frank Barath a 56 year old dock worker faces second degree murder charges in Lorain Municipal Court for the shooting of his mother in law Elizabeth Phillips 76 at their Stop 7 home near Vincent school early Sunday. Neighbors said Barath was intoxicated and quarreled with Phillips after her reprimand. Barath claimed he was not intoxicated and offered no motive. The sheriff noted the case occurred in Sheffield township and will be charged in Lorain. Four married daughters and two at home children described.
A tropical hurricane battered Bimini, 45 miles east of Miami, causing heavy property damage but no reported deaths. Sixty percent of mainland buildings on the single street were crushed. food and water supplies were strained until aid could arrive. Pilot Charles Lorber from Pan American Airways reported the scene after a hasty inspection and headed toward Miami or Nassau.
Arlene Machovina, 3, of North Ridgeville, is hospitalized at Elyria Memorial with second degree burns over most of her body after flames from a bonfire ignited her clothing on Saturday. Neighbor Harver Berry saw the flames and beat them out with his hands as the child played nearby.
Residents along Gracecourt Ced ar street and Wurst court were warned that city water would be shut off at 7 30 a m tomorrow for a short time due to repairs. Service Director Fred A Underhill urged people in the area to stockpile enough water beforehand to cover needs during the outage.
Elyria announces a Community Chest campaign kickoff with a meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Lorain County Savings and Trust Company committee room. C. B. Smythe, council president, says officers and directors for the coming year will be elected and campaign plans discussed.
Four persons injured in motor vehicle incidents reported to police and sheriff deputies over the weekend. Arthur Mills 10 suffered minor facial and head injuries when struck at Cedar and Broad streets about 039 p.m. He was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital in the car that struck him. The elderly driver fled the scene and was not identified. Herbert Welty 19 and Ralph Stelzenburg 20 were treated for minor injuries after a collision on Route 59 and Baumham road with a car driven by Elia Rising of Florence G. Welty's car was wrecked. Joseph Eudio 212-15th street Lorain sustained a broken arm when his car skidded and tipped over at Hamilton and Glenwood. Eudio was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Annabelle Davis of Lorain and Eudio’s brother were in the car and not injured. Collisions at Ohio street and Washington avenue damaged cars driven by Harland Jobson and Benjamin Wooden. A truck driven by Mike Drer damaged T N Bates’s car on Cleveland street. James Johnson Berea and A V McFerron North Olmsted had cars damaged at Route 14 and Avon Belden road. Deputy sheriffs noted the reports.
United Press reports heavy killing frost across Ohio with 11 sections recording subfreezing temps. Meteorologist W H Alexander lists readings of 38 at Ashland Norwalk and Jackson, 31 at Lima, 32 at Bucyrus, and frost in Marion Napoleon Wilmington. Lower temps reached 34 at Renton and Circleville with Sidner at 35.
The Lawyers Club will begin its fall Saturday luncheon series next Saturday with Professor Alexander of Oberlin College delivering an address on the Background of the Italian Ethiopian Situation. Richard Stevens, club president, announced the program.
Ti Vernon Wagar of Oberlin will speak at the Elyria Rotary Club meeting at noon tomorrow at the Elks Club. He is superintendent of the Norwalk District of the North East Ohio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His subject is not announced.
Three Lorain County school projects gain Public Works Administration grants totaling 233,114 for Elyria Grafton and Oberlin. Elyria's James F. Brown notes a 57,781 grant toward a 117,000 addition at Jefferson Junior High with pay as you go funding for the rest. Walter Jantz of Grafton reports a 57,333 grant for a 125,900 new school building. Oberlin receives 13,000 for a 40,000 two room high school addition. Plans call for a two story wing 192 feet long with a taj auditorium and 11 classrooms. Construction must start by January 1 and finish by December 15, 1936. Continued on Page 2.
Five individuals pleaded guilty before Common Pleas Judge D. A. Cook after a Saturday afternoon raid by nine state agents and deputies on an illegal liquor operation. Names and addresses of those fined include Nazzy, Jack Dat, Vine Sey, Ethel Fazekas, and John Nagy, with fines ranging up to 549 dollars plus costs. Officials said the crackdown used tips from the bootlegger grapevine and the danger of quick evidence disposal. The operation was led by state agent H L Miller with deputies Jim and Bert White and others in the district.
