UPI reports October CPI up 1 percent driven by housing costs with gasoline heating oil and food rising but not as fast as the prior month. The 12 month inflation reached 12.2 percent tying 1974 calendar year peak.
The Labor Department signals tentative shifts in price patterns but warns improvement is not yet assured. October CPI rose: gasoline up 1.8 percent, home heating oil 1.3 percent, food and beverages 0.7 percent, fruits fell 1.2 percent while meat and eggs rose 1 percent. Housing costs climbed 1.5 percent for ninth straight month, driving two thirds of total increases. CPI stands at 225.4, meaning $100 in 1967 now costs $225.40.
Moslem students holding the U S Embassy and 49 hostages warn they mined the compound amid rising tensions. Ayatollah Khomeini rejects U N mediation and says hostages could face trial as spies, while Waldheim’s Security Council aims to urge release. State Dept warns against entry during Tasua and Ashura.
Amherst Township officials plan a Dec 10 meeting with county leaders to discuss forming an Amherst Township police department. Township trustee Norman Becker said incorporation as a city is four to five years away, with a June levy to fund the new police force and a goal to avoid over development and annexation while preserving the small town atmosphere.
Lorain County hunters opened the five day deer gun season with a strong start bagging 10 bucks including a 210 pound nine pointer at Keystone Hardware in LaGrange. The opening day accounted for about a third of the 1978 county harvest as officials note record Deer checks and large weights. The season runs until 5 p.m. Friday with statewide ODNR predicting a near 96 000 gun harvest and a high deer population across Ohio.
A weather notice predicts showers tonight with a low in the upper 30s to 40s and snow flurries by Wednesday with highs near 40. Forecaster notes high precipitation chances, southerly winds at 10 to 20 mph, and varying readings of 52 and 43 degrees earlier today. Details on Page A-5.
Elyria artist Paul Durisek and friend Scott Benjamin restored five ornate gasoline pumps from the 1960s for a Virginia restaurant. The pumps featured glass cylinders to view dyed bright colors of the gas, a selling point in early automotive days. The duo spent about two months on the project. each pump is valued between 1,300 and 2,504 dollars.
