Air New Zealand DC-10 crashed on Mt Erebus in Antarctica killing 257 aboard including eight Americans. Rescue efforts hampered by winds and cold. no sign of survivors. Incident occurred during a scheduled sightseeing flight near New Zealand.
Seldom Seen seven year old Japanese snow monkey ended a seven month odyssey with a capture in a Elyria garage after a three hour standoff. Police restrained a crowd of onlookers as Columbus Zoo officials prepared to reunite the creature with his eight wives.
An incoherent 38 year old woman with a hunting knife entered Edward Kennedy's office in the Dirksen Building and scuffled with Secret Service agents. She was arrested by Capitol Police after injuring an agent with a knife nick to the hand. Kennedy planned an extended campaign trip and the incident highlighted Secret Service protection rings surrounding the candidate.
In Youngstown UPI report US Steel plans to close the Ohio and McDonald works with up to 3,500 layoffs. District 26 Director Frank Lesganich accuses the move of enabling purchase of cheaper foreign steel. Mahoning Valley warns reeling from over 6,000 steel jobs lost in two years.
