Voinovich awards 875000 in grants across Lorain County

Gov. George V. Voinovich distributed 875,290 in state funds among Lorain Avon Lake and Elyria including 620,000 for York International and 69,000 to Ford for retraining. Century to buy Centel Ohio unit for 135 million

Century Telephone Enterprises of Louisiana agreed to acquire Centel Corp. Ohio subsidiary Central Telephone Co. of Ohio in Lorain for 135 million dollars. The deal, pending regulatory approvals, aims to close next spring and keeps Centel’s Ohio cellular operations separate. Wrecking ball to hit Sears Lee buildings

Lorain National Bank plans to demolish the former Sears and Lee Furniture buildings by year end to build a $600000 parking lot in the Broadway Avenue historic district. The city Design Review Board approved the project despite neighborhood objections. Bank president Stanley Piyor cited infeasibility of fitting operations into the buildings and said the bank may invest up to $3 million more downtown if the economy permits.

Vermilion elects council seat by coin flip and recount

Betty Uebbing won the Ward 2 Vermilion council seat after a 161 161 tie with incumbent Joseph Thayer Jr. at the Erie County Elections Board in Sandusky. Lorain lawyers withdraw opposition to public defender plan

Lorain County defense lawyers voted 18 to 1 to drop their opposition to a county operated public defender's office. They say they do not support the plan but are tired of being the target of county officials' complaints. Proponents contend the defender could reduce costs and improve indigent defense.
