Fred Underhill Named Safety Service Head

Elyria elects Fred A. Underhill as Safety Service Director. Born in LaGrange, he has lived in Elyria since 1903 and has prior duties as bailiff, sheriff, and deputy sheriff. Mayor elect W H VanOster announced the appointment, praising his experience and commitment to efficient city service.

Benzak fights for his life amid murder case

A 28 year old Eaton township farm hand Michael Benzak lies wounded with a bullet at the base of the brain and faces possible death or the electric chair if he recovers. Sheriff Adame swears a first degree murder warrant as authorities link him to the murder of Alice Wedie a 21 year old divorcee mother. A 22 caliber revolver found at the scene is identified as Benzak owned. A guard sits beside his bed as he remains dazed and has given only a partial confession. Wedie is buried at Grafton and is survived by a two year old daughter.

Red Cross Badge Is Swallowed By Hurley Daughter

Ruth Hurley, daughter of Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley, was resting at Waller Reed hospital after swallowing a Red Cross button. Doctors said no operation needed and she is expected to be well enough to return home within a day or two.

Smith Resigns as Head Grd at Elyria High School

Smith resigns after three years as Director of Athletics and head football coach at Elyria High. Effective at season end, the move follows earlier plans for Roy Clymer to lead the basketball team. Smith came to Elyria from Toronto in 1925 and improved both football and basketball programs during his tenure.

Wheat futures rise at opening on Chicago Board of Trade

Wheat futures prices leaped upward at the opening of trading on the Chicago Board of Trade with gains from a fraction of a cent to nearly cents. Corn, oats and rye moved higher in tandem with wheat. Also noted were a double funeral in Dennison for Mr and Mrs Russell Scheideger shot by Thomas Wheseler who then killed himself.

Driver of Death Car to Face Charge

Sheriff Clarence Adams swore a manslaughter warrant for John Yaschan 21 of Oberlin in the death of his uncle John Yaschan on Root road east of Elyria Thursday night. The car reportedly rolled over multiple times after failing to make a turn. A five gallon liquor container was found in the vehicle during the sheriff’s investigation.

Pleads Guilty and Fined in Liquor Transport Case

John Sabo pleaded guilty to transporting liquor and was fined $290 and costs by Major James Hewitt. Sabo fled police during a search, leaping a back fence to escape. Officers found a jug of liquor in his car and impounded it until his appearance.

Snowstorm Slam Hits Rockies and Denver Area

A severe midwinter storm blasted the Rockies and Denver region, dropping inches to over a foot of snow. Temperatures plunged to five below, with wind driven snow halting auto traffic from Fort Collins to Denver.
