Burned Mormon church library rising from the ashes
Librarian Paula Shepherd led a three year effort to rebuild the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints genealogical library in Kirtland after a May fire destroyed books and records. Generous donations from genealogists from near and far restored volumes and equipment, with shelving space added in trailers near the historical museum. The church, expected to be rebuilt by Nov 5, 1987, faced $2.5 million in damage and a replacement cost of about $1.75 million. The 775-member congregation is meeting across two counties in interim locations.
