No charges yet in slaying of 62 year old man

A 16 year old boy accused of fatally shooting Walter B. Sobotka at 3214 Oakdale Ave remains under armed guard at St. Joseph Hospital in fair condition. Prosecutor Barry Motch says county juvenile court will arraign the suspect with no court date set.

Juvenile Court Triage Over Possible Aggravated Murder Charge

A juvenile court hearing will decide if the boy is to be tried as an adult, which could lead to an aggravated murder charge. Coroner cites gunshot to heart as cause of Sobotka’s death after a confrontation with a youth armed with a .357 Magnum at his home. Detectives note the youth acted alone. blood and fingerprint tests are pending.

Higher interest may choke recovery in economy

Economists warn inflation and rising interest rates could halt any sustained rebound as commerce department prepares its first third quarter profit report and a revision of GNP. GNP growth slumped to 1 percent annual rate after a record 96 percent fall in Q2. Corporate profits fell $22.2 billion in Q2 with wide industry declines. Recession, one of the sharpest since World War II, ended in late summer, but growth may flatten again.

Official election count in Lorain County tabulated

The Lorain County Board of Elections completed the official count for the Nov 4 presidential election showing 104,261 total votes or 69 percent of registered voters. Election officials report no major changes from unofficial results. Elyrians total 205,276 votes, Lorain voters 26,522, townships 18,652, and 5,097 absentee ballots.

North Olmsted officials in Washington said UMPTA argues RTA cannot use federal funds to compete with an existing city bus line. A court ruling already allows RTA to cut subsidies and run parallel routes, risking the 50 year old city service if federal funding is pulled.
