North Ridgeville Superintendent Jack Moore warns that winter sports including basketball wrestling and swimming could be canceled if the 9.8 mill operating levy does not pass in a December 9 special election. A $1.2 million budget cut plan would end after school programs cut bus service and reduce staff, risking the suspension of all high school sports by January 23 if levy fails and cuts proceed.
Walter B. Sobotka 62 was shot to death when he confronted a burglar at his Oakdale Avenue home after returning from bowling. A 16-year-old suspect was wounded and is in fair condition as police guard him. The weapon, a stolen high powered pistol, was found nearby.

It earned finalist status in the under 50,000 circulation category for an investigative Doctors Clinic series detailing drug prescribing concerns after limited exams. The winner will be announced Wednesday morning in Phoenix.
Elyria continues to collect revenue from a .5 percent income tax that expired June 30. Auditor Beverly J. Renner told council that November bond retirement bills will be paid with this money, though she did not disclose the amount. The three year tax, approved by voters in 1977, was intended to retire city debts during the financial crisis.
The season's first snow fell Monday afternoon causing minor accidents and a last-minute rush by motorists to winterize cars. Snow accumulated 1.6 inches in North Ridgeville, with broader central Ohio bands reaching four inches. Weather service delayed warnings, and area tire dealers reported a surge in snow tire sales as Elyria police logged several weather-related fender benders. One injury accident occurred at about 6:20 p.m.
A brief weather notice reports an outside chance of snow flurries tonight with partial clearing and mid 20s lows. Wednesday will be partly cloudy with highs in the 20s, precipitation probability around 19 percent, northwest to west winds 5 to 14 mph, sunrise near 7:19 AM and sunset around 3:06 PM.
