Costly Blaze Near Capitol In Columbus

A fire early today destroyed two buildings two blocks north of Ohio's Capitol, with an estimated damage of at least 200000 to 500000 dollars. Firefighters from Columbus and nearby towns fought eight hours to prevent spread, while smoke and closure disrupted downtown traffic. Jewelry and an American Legion Post in the upper floors were partially salvaged as crews fought the stubborn blaze.

Recount Fails To Change Result Of Election

A recount of Avon Lake three precincts failed to alter the November 2 election results. Councilman elect Albert Kiingshirn remained with 392 votes, while James J. King, trailing by four votes, stayed seventh in the six seat contest. Coin flips decided four ties, naming winners in Sheffield Lake Village, Grafton township constable, Roch ester township Board of Elections, and Camden township justice.

U S Gunboat Ordered To Nanking

The U S river gunboat Oahu was ordered to proceed at full steam to Nanking from Ichang, 450 miles up the Yangtze, as the government evacuated major departments amid fear of Japanese capture. About 56 Americans and many foreigners stayed, while refugees crowded the waterfront and officials prepared for a possible move of government to Chungking.

Another Suspect Being Hunted In Grafton Case

A six foot farm hand with a ruddy complexion is now the latest suspect in the murder of 19 year old Louise Hornbeck. Her battered body was found in an old apple orchard near her home in Grafton on October 19. Sheriff William F. Graft said the man disappeared from Grafton after the crime and had long been a weekend visitor. Three other suspects remain in county jail for further investigation.

Veterans of Foreign Wars District Conference in Elyria

Plans for the Seventh District Conference of the Veterans of Foreign Wars were made by Elyria Post 1079 members. A get acquainted session Saturday afternoon, followed by a floor show and dance, kicks off a weekend of events. Burns Prove Fatal in Kenton Stove Explosion

Mrs. John Fackler, 33, died from burns after a stove blackening fluid exploded at her Kenton home. She wrapped herself in a blanket to stop the flames, walked to a neighbor’s house, then was taken to a hospital where she died.

One Pound Infant Dies in Zanesville Family

In Zanesville Ohio on November 17 a one pound infant born to Mr. and Mrs. John Mattey died after surviving less than a day. The baby was kept in an incubator and fed by eyedropper while four siblings and the parents mourn the loss.

Denial of Citizenship to Stefko and Hanus Final

Judge Guy B Findley denied citizenship to Dominic Stefko 32 and Paul Hanus Jr 22 of Elyria. Stefko's appeal was dismissed by the district court of appeals making the denial final. Hanus asked to dismiss his appeal leaving Stefko’s case before the Court. Yetta Lane and her son Jerry Lane counsel for the defendants said they would file new applications in Federal Court in Cleveland. Judge Findley advised clearing the five year record before reapplying. The decision strikes a blow at the International Workers Order a group claimed to have 140000 members in the US with about 60 percent foreign born. Bus And Coupe Collision Injures Three on Middle Avenue

A Greyhound Bus and a coupe driven by Frank Pronesti, 20, collided at Middle Avenue and 15th Street at 11 37 am. Three people were injured, two seriously. Bus driver Charles Light, 35, and passenger Elizabeth Johnson, 38, both suffered multiple contusions and possible internal injuries. Pronesti had minor injuries, his sister Angela 14 unharmed.
