Elyria Beats Lorain for 100th Coach Victory

Elyria won 13 6 over Lorain marking coach Bill Barton’s 100th win at the school since he arrived 16 years ago. Barton’s career record stands at 100 wins in 148 decisions with honors including last season’s UPI Coach of the Year. Seven other games ended in ties as reported on today’s sports pages.

Cyclone devastates East Pakistan leaving massive deaths

Reports from Dacca say a cyclone and 30 foot tidal waves struck East Pakistan causing extensive loss of life. Initial tolls cite 25 000 dead and up to 100 000 missing with entire islands submerged and millions left homeless over a 10 000 square mile area. Warships head for relief as communications collapse.

Weather Update With Rain Likely In Cool Humid Start

Cloudy and cooler today with a chance of drizzle and highs in the 40s. Rain likely tonight and tomorrow with lows upper 30s to low 40s and tomorrow's highs around 40s. Monday stays cloudy and cool with precipitation chances around 48 to 70 percent. Sunset at 5 09 p m and sunrise at 7 14 a m noted. Climbers face possible rescue bill at Yosemite peak

Warren Harding and Dean Caldwell deny asking for helicopter aid to reach the 3400 foot El Capitan Rock in Yosemite. National Park Service officials say the operation was costly and Harding may be billed. An 18 man helicopter team helped, four remained. weather favored continued ascent while ground crews blamed miscommunication for the rescue effort.

18 Yanks killed as lull in Viet fighting ends

In Saigon, UPI reports Communist forces escalated attacks, killing 18 Americans and wounding 64 over two days after a 48 hour lull with no US deaths. Spokesmen said nine Americans died and 21 wounded Thursday, plus nine dead and 43 injured yesterday amid continued South Vietnamese fighting on the ground.

President Nixon spends the weekend at Camp David with Pat Nixon and family amid reports of large weapon seizures near Tri Ton. FBI arrests man indicted in Mall theft case

Cleveland man Joseph William Drago, 45, indicted by a Lorain County grand jury for a 1968 theft of 43000 from a Midway Mall bank, was arrested in Farrell Pennsylvania by FBI agents. Arrest followed a joint Cleveland police and FBI probe on a federal unlawful flight to avoid prosecution warrant.

Elyria Father Dies From Route 24 Crash Injuries

An Elyria man Donald A Masters 39 died at St Joseph Hospital Lorain from injuries after a collision at Route 24 and Elyna Avenue Sheffield Township Thursday morning. His four year old son Patrick also died. Andrew Zilka 41 and Mrs Zilka were injured. Masters worked for Crest Weed Construction Co. The crash remains under State Highway Patrol investigation.

Four men indicted in Lorain bank heist case in Cleveland raid

Coates 38 Brook Park Charles F Grisham 22 Warren and Joseph Diorio 40 Youngstown indicted together. Diorio trial underway in Lorain County. Coates and Grisham free on bond. Previously tried in Cleveland federal court and acquitted in Oct 1969. They face charges of disguising as Brinks guards to coerce surrender of 93000 at Lorain Savings and Trust Midway Mall branch on Aug 16 1968. Drago to appear before LS Commissioner in Pittsburgh likely Monday. extradition proceedings expected.

Union aims to reopen Fisher plant Friday after strike

The eight week UAW walkout near settlement with General Motors moves toward reopening the Elyria Fisher Body plant. Local 780 will vote on national and local three year contracts, with a Friday target to return some workers on third shift and set voting dates. Ball predicted ratification and a quick return for maintenance and tool room staff as negotiators push toward full staff resume.

Koehring proposal rejected by United Steel Workers at Lorain

Striking United Steel Workers Local 1242 and Local 4849 remain out on strike at the Koehring Co Lorain Division over contract terms. Management spokesman Richard A Stith said no future meetings are scheduled. Local 1242 rejected the latest offer removing incentive pay but proposing a higher base pay raise. Local 4849 discussed contract language but did not accept it. Both groups want incentive pay restored and base pay increases set to take effect in August 1971.
